The gameplay trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has provided fans with a lot to digest, even though a release date has not yet been announced. The showcase featured over 10 minutes of gameplay, which included an impressive amount of content such as the introduction of the Lizard and Kraven, as well as new traversal and gadget abilities. Of particular note was the reveal of the iconic black symbiote suit, which will have a significant impact on the narrative of Marvel's Midnight Suns. This was an unexpected surprise, as the symbiote is known to play a major role in the story. The gameplay showed off Peter Parker's unique tendril-based abilities, which allow for greater range and damage compared to his default costume. While it is likely that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will feature a variety of cosmetic suits, the presence of the symbiote suit may require Insomniac to find a way to incentivize players to choose other suits as well.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Symbiote Suit Might Be Too OP
The symbiote suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 not only boasts a distinct look intentionally kept from the original game, but also offers Peter exciting new combat mechanics. Players can strike enemies from a distance, launch them into the air, and grab multiple foes at once with tendrils that hoist them high before slamming them down. This suit appears to be Peter's primary option, given its abilities slotted into the left-hand UI wheel, but he will likely also have the ability to fight crime in his regular costume. The symbiote suit is a much-needed addition to Peter's arsenal, as his Spider-Man counterpart Miles Morales possesses a more captivating set of genetically enhanced abilities. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the symbiote suit to appear in the franchise, especially since it was teased at the end of the original game. It may prove challenging to separate fans from it, just as it will be difficult for Peter to overcome its separation anxiety.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Needs an Incentive for Peter to Switch Suits
Peter's alternate suits should offer unique mods or abilities that cater to fans' preferred playstyle, rather than simply serving as redundant options to the symbiote suit. However, restricting players from swapping out mods for different suits would be a step backwards for the game. To solve this issue, Insomniac could create a symbiote version for each alternate suit, allowing players to enjoy the unique look and benefits of their preferred suit while also incorporating the symbiote. For example, even wearing a Superior Spider-Man skin in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 would offer a distinct appearance when combined with the symbiote suit.
Allowing players to equip the symbiote regardless of their chosen costume would provide a convenient option to switch to another suit if desired. However, this could potentially result in Peter's customization taking a backseat to Miles' in the sequel. Additionally, the powerful alien suit may pose a growing threat to players as they progress through Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The game is set to release in the fall and will be available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
