Destiny 2's older patrol destinations lack worthwhile rewards and activities, making them underwhelming for players to explore.
The faction vendors in the old patrol destinations no longer have access to reputation mechanics, making them obsolete.
The fishing activity in patrol destinations is more engaging and rewarding compared to Public Events, emphasizing the requirement for improved activities in the old patrol zones.
When there are no seasonal events happening in patrol destinations, such as the fishing activity in Season of the Deep, exploring patrol zones in Destiny 2 can be quite lackluster. The older patrol zones are being phased out and the remaining locations offer little in terms of valuable rewards. To breathe new life into the game, future updates should focus on revitalizing the older patrol zones. The newer patrol zones introduced in recent expansions are a step in the right direction, but it's high time that Destiny 2's original patrol zones receive some much-needed attention.
Aside from completing Lost Sectors or finding Xur, there aren't many compelling reasons for players to venture into Destiny 2's patrol destinations, especially the older ones. Many of these activities have been revamped or retired to the Destiny Content Vault, leaving behind unproductive remnants. While the newer locations introduced in recent expansions offer worthwhile features, the older locations are but a shadow of their former glory.
Destiny 2's Old Patrol Destinations Need Better Rewards and Activities
One significant aspect of patrol destinations in Destiny 2 that has been overlooked is the faction vendors. Previously, players were able to earn faction reputation in the patrol destinations and acquire loot from the vendors. However, this feature is now only available in the patrol destinations from the latest expansions, leaving older destinations like Nessus, EDZ, and the Cosmodrome with vendors that no longer offer reputation mechanics.
Another reason why the old vendors have become obsolete is the diminishing value of Destiny 2's planetary materials. In the original Destiny, these materials were essential for unlocking new perks and mod slots for armor and weapons. However, in the current state of Destiny 2, most planetary materials serve solely as vouchers to exchange for the game's primary currency, Glimmer. In contrast, the destinations from the latest expansions avoid this issue as players can earn faction reputation by collecting the planetary materials there.
Content in Destiny 2, the old patrol destinations are primarily useful for earning Glimmer. However, Public Events in these areas have long been criticized for their lackluster rewards, earning the nickname "two tokens and a blue" since the Curse of Osiris expansion in 2017. Although this expansion has been retired to the Destiny Content Vault, veteran players still find themselves completing Public Events. While temporary activities related to the current Season have brought some enjoyment to these patrol destinations, it is not enough to revive their appeal. Considering the impact of the fishing activity in Season of the Deep, future Seasons should approach introducing activities to patrol zones with caution and learn from past mistakes.
The community's main frustration with fishing in Destiny 2 is that Public Events interrupt fishing activities, forcing players to participate in the event. Despite the pressure to engage with Public Events, many players still try to avoid them or find ways to minimize their interference with fishing. Given the disparity in rewards between the two activities, fishing takes precedence at the moment.
What Destiny 2's original patrol destinations truly need is the same level of attention given to the new locations introduced in recent expansions. While these new locations still have their flaws, the patrol destinations in Destiny 2 since the Beyond Light expansion offer numerous rewarding activities that are lacking in the older planets. Whether it is in future Seasons or expansions, Destiny 2 should revitalize its patrol destinations to breathe new life into them.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
