Despite being a champion in the WWF and holding a title belt, Kerry Von Erich faced mental health struggles, drug abuse, and tragically died by suicide in 1993 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In The Iron Claw, Kerry returns home after learning that the US Olympic team would not be attending the Games in Russia due to political issues. Devastated by the loss of his Olympic dreams, his father convinces him to join David and Kevin in the wrestling ring. Together, the trio becomes an unstoppable force, but the pressure of maintaining their father's approval begins to take a toll over time.
After David passes away, Kerry is given a title shot instead of Kevin and becomes the NWA champion. Despite his excitement and fulfillment of his father's dream, Kerry's late night motorcycle ride results in the severing of his left foot. Rather than giving up, Kerry returns to the ring wearing a prosthetic and later finds success in the WWF without anyone knowing about his foot.
The story then shifts to the events leading to Kerry's death. Visibly upset during a Christmas visit, Kerry gifts his father a new gun and becomes enraged when he refuses to use it. That night, he calls Kevin, expressing his struggles and fear, even pleading with his father to look after him. The next day, Kevin hears a gunshot and finds that Kerry has died by suicide with the gun he had given to their father.
After his amputation, Kerry's wrestling career declined and he became addicted to painkillers, leading to two arrests. The Baltimore Sun reported that he was indicted on the second charge, which triggered a downward spiral as he faced prison time. Kerry Von Erich tragically died a few days after his 33rd birthday on February 18, 1993, taking his own life on his father's ranch. According to Bret Hart's book Hitman, Kerry had often expressed his desire to be with his brothers, waiting for the right time.
