21 Jump Street (2012)
Image via Columbia Pictures
Run Time: 1 hr 49 min | Director: Phil Lord, Chris Miller
Cast: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Brie Larson, Dave Franco
I'm not sure Phil Lord and Chris Miller ever achieved the same level of surprising success as they did with their animated comedy about Legos. (Also on this list!) However, they came very close with their initial venture, 21 Jump Street. The film adaptation transformed the brooding late-80s police procedural into a hilarious buddy-cop comedy featuring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. It's important to note that this movie shouldn't be as enjoyable or as funny as it actually is. Yet, Hill and Tatum shine as rookie officers Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko, who go undercover at a high school to uncover the source of a new drug named HFS (which stands for "Holy Fucking Shit"). 21 Jump Street represents a brilliant contemporary interpretation of the buddy-cop genre, and not watching it should be considered a crime in most states [citation needed]. — Vinnie Mancuso

Determined to take revenge, she crosses paths with Eleanor (Maya Hawke), a new student burdened by a false rumor labeling her as a predator, spread by a classmate years ago. Drawing inspiration from the works of Hitchcock and Highsmith, they embark on a journey of reciprocal revenge. Although Do Revenge may not reach the level of the aforementioned 90s classics, it effectively blends dark humor with valuable life lessons and showcases the talents of two promising young actresses in Hollywood. - Emma Kiely

Run Time: 1 hr 54 min | Director: Mike Rianda

The Mitchells vs. the Machines is undeniably one of the best animated family comedy movies you've seen. Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and originally created by Sony Pictures Animation, the same studio behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, this film tells the story of a father and daughter who struggle to connect. As the daughter heads off to college to pursue her dream of becoming a filmmaker, the father suggests a road trip, but their plans are interrupted by a robot apocalypse. They must join forces to navigate through the chaos. Throughout The Mitchells vs. the Machines, you'll be pleasantly surprised at every turn. The film effectively blends powerful emotional moments with stunning artistic visuals, thanks to the inventive vision of Mike Rianda. It also brings forth a delightful sense of humor, reminiscent of Lord and Miller's previous works, especially Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Upon being taken in by the Brown family, Paddington manages to stir up a bit of chaos, yet despite this, the family eventually embraces him wholeheartedly. The Paddington franchise exudes warmth and kindness, captivating audiences with its endearing charm and heartfelt storytelling. Having watched Paddington, one cannot help but develop an inexplicable affection for this whimsical bear. — Ross Bonaime
Murder Mystery (2019)
Image via Netflix
Run Time: 1 hr 37 min | Director: Kyle Newacheck
Cast: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Luke Evans
The history of Adam Sandler's Netflix original films may be described as spotty, but there is one truly charming gem on the list: Murder Mystery. This film reunites Sandler with Jennifer Aniston, following their previous collaboration in Just Go With It (also a great movie!). The story revolves around Nick, a married NYPD officer, and Audrey, a hairdresser, as they find themselves deeply involved in a murder mystery aboard the yacht of a recently acquainted billionaire. While Murder Mystery, like many Netflix comedies, is best enjoyed as background entertainment with a lively group of friends, the undeniable star power of its two leads takes it to the next level.
