The upcoming game Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP will no longer be a remake, but rather a remaster of the original. It was initially announced by Dragami Games in June 2022, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Lollipop Chainsaw. The intention was to capitalize on the anniversary by bringing the game from seventh generation consoles to modern platforms, originally aiming for a 2023 release date. However, the game was delayed and is now expected to be released in 2024.

The original Lollipop Chainsaw was released in 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It was a collaboration between Suda51 from Grasshopper Manufacture and filmmaker James Gunn. Players assume the role of Juliet Starling, a high school cheerleader who has just turned 18. When her high school is attacked by zombies, Juliet uses her chainsaw to slay them. As the story progresses, Juliet's boyfriend gets bitten and she must decapitate him to prevent him from turning into a zombie, carrying his severed head with her. The game's unique premise, combined with its eccentric tone and visuals, has earned it a cult following. Instead of being remade for the new platforms, the decision has been made to remaster it.

This announcement was made on Lollipop Chainsaw's Twitter account by Yoshimi Yasuda, the original director of the game, and RePOP's producer. Yasuda posted a message in both English and Japanese, stating that RePOP's game design has changed from a remake to a remaster based on fan requests. He also included a screenshot comparing RePOP to the older versions of the game.

However, the decision to change the game to a remaster instead of a remake has not been well received. Many fans of the cult classic were hoping for a remake to address the clunky gameplay issues of the original Lollipop Chainsaw, which were commonly criticized in the 2012 title.
