Check out the gripping new survival thriller Society of the Snow, currently gaining attention on Netflix. Have you ever wondered what happened to the survivors of Flight 571? This tragic event took place in 1972 when the Uruguayan flight crashed into the Andes mountains, carrying 45 passengers consisting of a local rugby team, supporters, friends, and family.

12 passengers died upon impact, leaving 33 to endure harrowing conditions in the mountains. Some of these survivors later succumbed to their injuries and deteriorating health.

Now, a fictionalized version of their ordeal is available to stream on Netflix. But where are the real-life Society of the Snow survivors today? Here's what we know.

Society of the Snow: Where are the Flight 571 survivors now?

50 years after the horrific Flight 571 crash, many of the surviving passengers have gone on to use their experience in their later lives.

The flight first crashed on October 13, 1972, and the bulk of the group didn't receive help until day 72. Only 16 passengers survived when the rescue mission finally began. Among those survivors, many went on to become motivational speakers in addition to their careers, such as Uruguayan cardiologist Roberto Canessa, Gustavo Zerbino, and Ramón “Moncho” Sabella.

Nando Parrado transitioned into a career as an author, writing the book Miracle in the Andes in 2006, chronicling the 72 days he spent on the mountain and his subsequent journey home. Adolfo “Fito” Strauch, now a father of four, had his son Daniel Fernández Strauch play a pivotal role in organizing a commemorative rugby game to honor the 40th anniversary of the tragedy. Eduardo Strauch, Fito’s cousin, pursued a career as an architect, while Carlitos Páez, known for his resilient spirit, also pursued writing.

Some survivors, like Alfredo “Pancho” Delgado, choose to keep a low profile and reveal very little about themselves.

José Luis “Coche” Inciarte passed away shortly before the release of Society of the Snow in 2023.

The Society of the Snow survivors gathers every December 22nd, as reported by the New York Post, to share a meal and honor the memory of those they have lost. Survivor Roberto Canessa spoke to USA Today about the movie, saying, "I was immersed in that place again. I was back in the fuselage."
