The Jujutsu Kaisen fandom has certainly faced a difficult time in recent months. Many beloved characters from the series have met their end, both in the anime and ongoing manga. With a large portion of the cast either sidelined or killed off, fans are questioning the creator's motives behind these decisions.
Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen series has made a significant impact on the anime and manga industry since its debut in 2018. The 2020 anime adaptation further increased its popularity, thanks to its thrilling action, compelling story, and diverse cast of characters.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 and the ongoing manga. It seems that beloved characters are meeting their demise in consecutive storylines, leaving fans to question the value of getting attached to them.
Are most of the Jujutsu Kaisen characters fated to die in the series? Exploring Gege Akutami's intentions behind creating the characters
Upon its initial release, Jujutsu Kaisen captivated a global fanbase with its diverse and captivating characters. Satoru Gojo, in particular, emerged as a highly beloved figure and a symbol of the series. However, his tragic demise in chapter 236 of the manga cast a somber cloud over the show.
Some argue that Gojo's overwhelming power hindered others from taking the spotlight, as he was capable of solving any problem single-handedly. His sudden and underwhelming death left many fans disappointed and led to criticism of the series' creator, Gege Akutami.
Nevertheless, Gojo was not the sole character to meet their demise due to the storyline. The deaths of characters such as Riko Amanai, Suguru Geto, and Toji Fushiguro played a significant role in shaping the series' plot. Amanai's death set Geto on a dark path, eventually leading to his demise at the hands of Gojo. This event then allowed the ancient sorcerer Kenjaku to use Geto's body to seal Gojo and trigger the Shibuya massacre. Conversely, Fushiguro's actions and impending death paved the way for Gojo to become the most powerful sorcerer of the modern era.
The death of a central character in a series can be seen as essential for plot and character development, but Gege Akutami may have taken this concept too far. While many fans accepted Kento Nanami's recent death in the anime as a necessary sacrifice to develop Yuji Itadori's character, the death of Nobara Kugisaki was deemed unnecessary for the overall plot by most fans on social media.
Nobara stood out as one of the most cherished figures in the narrative. As part of the trio of lead characters with Megumi Fushiguro and Yuji Itadori, her absence since her passing may be seen as contributing little to the plot, aside from aiding Itadori's development.
Aoi Todo, a standout character from the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, suffered serious injuries in his battle with Mahito and has not been mentioned in the story since then. Similarly, Megumi's whereabouts in the manga are unknown after seemingly disappearing when Sukuna reincarnated into his original body. With the number of character deaths in the story, fans are beginning to question whether they should become attached to any other characters, as they may ultimately meet the same fate for the sake of the storyline.

During Jump Festa 2020, Gege Akutami disclosed that by the conclusion of the series, either one member of the group - Itadori, Kugisaki, Fushiguro, and Gojo - will die, or everyone else except for that individual will perish. Given the current status of the story, it's not difficult to anticipate which conclusion Akutami is aiming for.
If Akutami does intend to conclude Jujutsu Kaisen by having all the main characters die, fans should prepare for what could be the darkest ending in shonen anime history. Many online fans have even thought about stopping the series after Nobara's death, wondering how many more heroes will have to die for the sake of the story.
Jujutsu Kaisen has firmly established itself as one of the most beloved shonen anime series worldwide. Yet, with every new episode, the future grows bleaker for our heroes, and the destiny of the Jujutsu sorcerers remains uncertain.
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I have mixed feelings about the recent developments in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. On the one hand, I appreciate the fact that Gege Akutami is not afraid to take risks and kill off major characters. This keeps the story unpredictable and prevents it from becoming stale. On the other hand, I am also attached to these characters and it is difficult to see them go. I understand that their deaths may be necessary for the plot, but it still does not make it any easier.
Overall, I think that Akutami is doing a good job with the story and I am excited to see where it goes next. However, I hope that he does not kill off too many more of my favorite characters!
