The future of the Overwatch League is uncertain, raising questions about how it will impact Overwatch 2 and its esports scene.
The potential termination of the Overwatch League may render themed skins and cosmetics outdated, leaving players uncertain about their fate. It remains unclear whether Overwatch League skins will be removed altogether or if players will have a limited window to acquire them before they are phased out alongside the league tab.
The professional scene of Overwatch 2 has remained unclear in recent months, leaving the impact on the teams in the Overwatch League uncertain. With suggestions that this year may mark the end of the league as fans currently know it, there is much speculation about how this will affect Overwatch 2. In June, it was announced that a vote regarding the future of the Overwatch League would take place after the season concludes. Although this news was revealed several months ago, the recent conclusion of the Grand Finals brings attention to the potential dilemma for Overwatch 2.
Overwatch League Ending Could Make Its Themed Skins Obsolete
The San Francisco Shock and other teams have been offered a $6 million payment from Blizzard if they choose to leave the Overwatch League, highlighting the uncertain state of the esport. The organization recently made a brief statement on Twitter, mentioning a "revitalized esports program." This could either signify the continuation of the Overwatch League or the introduction of something completely new.
While the potential end of the league has its advantages and disadvantages, it leaves the fate of the themed cosmetics and skins in question. Over the past five years, more than 120 Overwatch League skins have been created for various teams, making up a significant portion of the game's nearly 600 available skins.
The Chengdu Hunters, an Overwatch League team, surprised fans by leaving the franchise in July. Adding to the shock, the skins for this Chinese team were also taken off the Overwatch 2 shop on July 7, although they can still be equipped. Speculation suggests that Blizzard might eliminate the Overwatch League shop category, as other skins have become scarce over time. If this happens, it's probable that Overwatch League Tokens, which can only be obtained by watching league matches or purchasing them with real money, will be discontinued as well.
There is a low likelihood that Overwatch 2 will remove the Overwatch League skins that players have already acquired due to changes or the league's end. Even when the controversial Zarya Alien skin dedicated to "Sinatraa" faced criticism and was removed, it was not taken away from players' inventories. Instead, players were given the option to keep it or receive a refund.
If the Overwatch League tab is eliminated, players will likely have a limited time to obtain various team skins before they are phased out. This raises questions about the continuation of the tradition of crafting a unique championship skin for the Grand Finals. While the Dallas Fuel's Chained King Reaper recently debuted to celebrate their 2022 victory, it remains uncertain whether this year's winner, the Florida Mayhem, will receive a similar skin.
Blizzard may provide a comprehensive update on the future of the league when Season 7 of Overwatch 2 is released. Currently, the specific details are being finalized. However, the fate of the league skins remains undecided.
Overwatch 2 is currently accessible on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
