Contrary to the typical fantasy villain archetype, Sandrakk, the antagonist in Immortals of Aveum, is motivated by surprisingly human reasons instead of a simple desire for global domination. While players initially perceive Sandrakk as a purely evil enemy, the game quickly reveals that his intentions in the Everwar run deeper than expected. As the protagonist, Jak delves into the truth behind Sandrakk's quest for power, he unveils a shocking connection to the Order of Immortals, casting doubt on everything he thought he knew.

Early on in Immortals of Aveum, players receive their first indication that Sandrakk is more complex than he seems. After joining the Order of Immortals, Jak is dispatched to the Pale Forest to investigate the actions of Sandrakk's enigmatic ally, the Hand of Sandrakk. Eventually, Jak comes face-to-face with Sandrakk inside an ancient Leyline Tower, only to be surprised by the antagonist's unexpectedly mild-mannered demeanor. Following the encounter, Jak confides in his field commander and realizes that Sandrakk was once a member of the Order of Immortals before taking a darker path.

Sandrakk’s Past With the Immortals is Shrouded in Mystery

The Shocking Betrayal That Shattered Sandrakk's Loyalty in Immortals of Aveum

Despite Jak's persistent efforts to gather information about Sandrakk's involvement with the Order from his allies, he is consistently met with rejection. However, during the Nocea mission in Immortals of Aveum, Jak encounters Sandrakk and learns some intriguing details about his enigmatic past, although the information remains limited. Nonetheless, it becomes evident that Sandrakk and the Immortals' leader, General Kirkan, hold a deep-seated animosity towards each other.

During their confrontation at Nocea, Sandrakk asserts that his sole objective is to put an end to the Everwar. He accuses General Kirkan of mindlessly pursuing the destruction of the world. Standing face-to-face with her former ally, Kirkan retorts that she continues to suffer the consequences of not killing him and instead exiling him. Later, Kirkan confides in Jak that she and Sandrakk had been close friends and fought together for three decades before their falling out. She hands Jak a heavily redacted dossier that provides some insight into Sandrakk's time with the Immortals. However, it is not until the final chapters of Immortals of Aveum that the complete story of his expulsion from the order is finally unveiled.

An Unthinkable Act Led Sandrakk to Abandon the Order of Immortals

The Shocking Betrayal That Shattered Sandrakk's Loyalty in Immortals of Aveum

General Kirkan's dossier reveals that Sandrakk was recruited into the Order of Immortals as a child by Thaddeus, the former leader with a cowboy-style. Sandrakk, a gifted warrior similar to Triarch Magnus Jak, proved to be highly effective until he defied Kirkan's orders and was subsequently expelled from the order. The specific reasons behind Sandrakk's abandonment of Kirkan and his comrades remain a mystery until he and Jak confront each other once again in the enchanting realm known as The Path.

While traversing The Path, a realm that brings memories to life, Jak discovers that Sandrakk was banished from the order for refusing to participate in a brutal assault on his homeland. Kirkan, in his relentless pursuit of ending the Everwar by any means, devised a plan to manipulate Aveum's leylines over Rasharn, depriving its people of magical abilities. Recognizing the plan as a potential war crime, Sandrakk denounced Kirkan and returned to Rasharn to rally his fellow countrymen, who had been magically incapacitated, in seeking vengeance against the kingdom of Lucium.

Despite the inexcusable genocidal acts committed by Sandrakk and his armies during their vengeful war against Lucium, the motivations of Aveum's antagonist, the Immortals of Aveum, become somewhat comprehensible once his complete story unfolds. However, it was ultimately the actions of one self-proclaimed hero that led him down this dark path. Immortals of Aveum can be played on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
