Episode 35 of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime adaptation delves into the intense battle to rescue Satoru Gojo. Titled "Séance," this episode not only showcases two thrilling high-level confrontations, but also introduces an intriguing and powerful technique. The well-executed flashback, exploring the lives of curse users before and after the advent of the blessed one, adds to the episode's seamless pacing. Overall, "Séance" proves to be a refreshing addition to the Shibuya Incident Arc, ranking among the best episodes thus far.
The Mediums Clash
Not only did these two battles unveil and enlighten us on new formidable techniques, they also served a greater purpose. Undoubtedly, the most captivating aspect of this episode is the return of Toji Fushiguro, or rather, Toji Zen'in, and the profound impact it will have on the forthcoming episodes. Previously, the only individual who came close to eliminating Satoru is now pitted against Yuji and his son Megumi, although naturally, it is not solely Toji himself who faces this challenge. It didn't take them long to realize that the curse users who had set the barrier were disregarding the fundamental principles of barriers. By positioning themselves outside of it, in the most conspicuous location, the barrier significantly amplified its power. Upon reaching the destination, Yuji, Megumi, and Takuma swiftly subdued Jiro, leaving their senior to confront Ogami and her grandson.
In this episode, the focus was on showcasing Takuma Ino's unique abilities in the art of séance. His innate technique, known as the auspicious beast summon, allows him to tap into the powers of four sacred creatures - Kaichi, Reiki, Kirin, and Ryu - by concealing his identity behind a mask.
During the battle, Ino could only utilize the powers of Kaichi and Reiki. Kaichi summons a spiral-patterned horn infused with cursed energy, serving as a formidable projectile weapon. On the other hand, Reiki envelops his body in water, granting him enhanced mobility and defense against attacks. It proved particularly effective in close-range combat. However, his opponent possessed the ability to transform into other individuals, presenting a formidable challenge.
Toji Reincarnated
Ogami's ultimate card for battling the remaining sorcerers after the sealing of Satoru Gojo was none other than Toji, the individual who came closest to defeating Satoru. With her unique ability, she can assume the appearance of another person or summon the physical or spiritual essence of a deceased individual using any part of their body, regardless of size. To activate this technique, she must gather cursed energy for a few minutes and speak the name of her desired target.
This power not only grants Ogami the ability to transform herself, but she can also transform others, as demonstrated when she transformed her grandson into Toji. By summoning only the physical body, they can wield the physical abilities of the chosen individual without being influenced by their personality, which could hinder their intentions.
The Day He Was Born
When it comes to harnessing this power, Toji is considered the top choice due to his exceptional power and skills. However, this assumption was quickly challenged after witnessing the events of Hidden Inventory. It became evident that Toji cannot be easily controlled, even in death, proving that their initial belief was misguided.Every single moment of this episode felt perfectly timed, but the highlight was undoubtedly the expertly crafted flashback interruption. Few shows pay attention to detail as much as Jujutsu Kaisen does, and this particular flashback serves as a prime example of that. Even for relatively minor characters like Jiro Awasaka and Ogami, Gege ensures that their past is intricately woven into the present, aligning with the transformative impact that Satoru's birth with the Six Eyes has on the world.
On December 7th, 1989, news of a Gojo child born with the extraordinary Six Eyes ability was rapidly spreading along with the hefty bounty placed on his head. Previously, curse users were left unpersecuted as sorcerers were preoccupied with battling cursed spirits. However, both Jiro and Ogami, working as assassins, seized the opportunity upon learning about the substantial reward.
As they stealthily followed the child, they were overcome with fear when they witnessed his otherworldly power. Satoru, perceiving them as insignificant creatures, locked eyes with them, leaving them with no choice but to flee and hide. Their once favorable circumstances had abruptly changed, as the balance of power shifted dramatically.
Easy Teamwork
The battle depicted in this episode was truly remarkable, especially considering the recent ordeal with the grasshopper curse. Whether intentional or not, it was visually stunning, featuring numerous impressive shots that added depth to a relatively minor clash. Although it may have been overshadowed by the surprise return of Toji, it still deserves recognition.
From start to finish, the fight was flawlessly choreographed. The synergy between Megumi and Yuji was palpable, with Megumi utilizing his strategic mind and Yuji showcasing his strength to take down a formidable adversary through impeccable teamwork. Jiro skillfully employed his inverse technique, but ultimately, he was outmatched.
Ino was highly motivated to care for his pupils, eagerly assisting them. However, the reality was different right from the start, and Nanami was aware of it as well. Presently, it is imperative for them to rescue Ino before they experience the loss of another sorcerer.
