Showrunner David Jenkins explains the reveal of Our Flag Means Death season 2's famous Pirate Queen. The show follows Stede Bonnet, an aspiring pirate who catches the attention of feared pirate Blackbeard. In season 2, Stede attempts to reunite with Blackbeard after their breakup in season 1. Jenkins discusses the introduction of new characters, specifically Zheng Yi Sao, praising her organized approach and noting that she may be a more formidable opponent than any other pirate Stede has encountered.
Zheng Yi Sao Is One Of History's Most Successful & Underrated Pirates
She is undeniably the most successful pirate in history, yet her name remains unknown in the Western world. Far surpassing the likes of Blackbeard and any other renowned pirates, her accomplishments speak for themselves. As the men aboard her ship witness her exceptional leadership, they cannot help but compare it to their previous experiences. The soup is satisfying, the crew sleeps under the open sky, and the morning bell provides structure. It becomes evident that Zheng Yi Sao has created a far more functional and efficient system. While she possesses the necessary fierceness for her trade, her motivations extend beyond mere rebellion or personal desires, unlike someone like Stede who plays at being a pirate. She is driven by a grander purpose, which makes her all the more formidable.
Similar to the adaptation in Our Flag Means Death, the real-life Zheng Yi Sao achieved remarkable accomplishments as she rose to power following her husband's demise, leading the Guangdong Pirate Confederation into conflicts against major European and Chinese naval forces. With an impressive fleet of around 400 ships and approximately 60,000 pirates between 1801 and 1810, Sao's campaigns not only granted her immense power but also instilled fear, ultimately resulting in her successful negotiation of retirement upon her Confederation's surrender. This negotiation secured her pardons, wealth, and the privilege of maintaining a small fleet. Sao later ventured into business, overseeing a notorious gambling establishment until her peaceful passing in 1844.
Sao's lack of attention in pop culture adaptations, compared to figures like Blackbeard, Mary Bonny, and Anne Read, is a notable contrast. Although she has served as loose inspiration in works such as Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, Sao has rarely been the central focus or a significant presence in pirate-themed media. However, recent portrayals, such as Crystal Yu's portrayal in Doctor Who's "Legend of the Sea Devils" and Quan's appearance in Our Flag Means Death season 2, are gradually providing Sao with the recognition she deserves as one of history's esteemed pirates.
Sao's impactful introduction in her Our Flag Means Death debut solidifies Ruibo's character as a formidable force. Not only does the appearance of the pirate queen expand the beloved series' universe, but it also delves deeper into the multifaceted nature of piracy beyond the idealistic dreams of Stede and the tyrannical rule of Blackbeard. The emphasis on Sao's powerful faction raises questions among viewers about potential clashes between her crew, Stede's crew, and Blackbeard's crew in future encounters.
