Spider-Man 2 hints at the introduction of the Green Goblin as the next game's main villain, with references to the G-Serum and Norman Osborn's involvement in its creation.
The G-Serum, often found in different Spider-Man timelines, bestows increased strength and abilities upon the user, but at the expense of their sanity. In Spider-Man 3, it remains uncertain as to who will take on the role of the Green Goblin, with both Norman and his son Harry being potential contenders. Their personal motivations and conflicts may be closely linked to the usage of this serum.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2, released earlier this month, draws on decades of Spider-Man lore. The iconic superhero first appeared in comic books in the early 1960s and has since become incredibly popular worldwide. While longtime fans have adored New York's heroic arachnid for years, Insomniac Games' Spider-Man 2 has also attracted a massive audience who may not be familiar with all of the hero's past adventures. Although the game is accessible to both avid fans and casual players, there are numerous small details that only those acquainted with Spider-Man's other escapades will fully grasp.
One of these significant details, which holds particular significance for long-time fans, is the inclusion of the G-Serum in the game. Although the mysterious serum is mentioned several times, it is primarily foreshadowed in the later part of the game. While Spider-Man 3 has not been officially announced, there have been strong hints suggesting its development, potentially featuring a third playable Spider-Person. While fans are excited about the prospect of another hero, the presence of the G-Serum indicates who the next game's villain is likely to be for longtime fans. Insomniac Games has been building up tension around Norman Osborne and his corporation since the first game, and the inclusion of the G-Serum suggests that Norman will assume the role of one of Spider-Man's most iconic villains in the upcoming installment.
The Green Goblin Will Likely Be Spider-Man 3's Antagonist
What Exactly is Marvel's Spider-Man 2's G-Serum?
The Goblin Serum, also known as G-Serum, features prominently in various versions of Spidey's story, typically signaling the imminent arrival of the Green Goblin. Different Spider-Man timelines provide different origins for this mysterious concoction. According to some, the serum started as a medicine for the sick, while others claim it was an unsuccessful attempt to create super-soldier formula. An alternative variation suggests that Doc Ock developed it as a means of revenge against Norman Osborn. Regardless of the particular timeline, the serum grants its consumer enhanced strength and abilities, albeit at the expense of their mental well-being.
The Green Goblin has taken on various forms throughout different Spider-Man series. While certain iterations portray him as a mutated monster, others, such as the popular Raimi adaptation, depict him as a man wearing a suit with enhanced abilities, similar to Spider-Man. Since the Green Goblin is typically Norman Osborn, these versions of the story often show him utilizing Oscorp's vast wealth and influence to create technology that aids him. The iconic Green Goblin Gadgets include his pumpkin bombs and the Goblin Glider, which he utilizes to swiftly navigate the city.
The Identity of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Green Goblin Remains Uncertain
The presence of G-Serum in Spider-Man 2 continues to foreshadow Green Goblin as an upcoming villain. The question now is not if the villain will appear, but who it will be. While Norman typically wears the suit, Harry's illness opens up the possibility of him becoming Green Goblin, as seen in other stories. The serum's potential as a medicine suggests that Norman may want it for revenge or to save his son. It is likely that this version of Green Goblin will have a technology-based theme, considering Oscorp's prominence in the series.
Although Spider-Man 3 has not been announced and is likely years away, the impending arrival of Green Goblin suggests that Insomniac's protagonists will face their darkest mission yet. The close relationship between Peter and the Osborn family will make battling Green Goblin emotionally challenging. Despite Green Goblin's iconic status, a good superhero game needs multiple antagonists. Insomniac games should explore some of Spider-Man's darkest villains to fully embrace the tonal shift that the second game has set the series on.
