The Game-Changing Dilemma: The Fate of Green Goblin in the Marvel's Spider-Man Series

Marvel's Spider-Man series must make a crucial design decision for the iconic Green Goblin character, as his introduction into the game is inevitable

Highlights

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will feature three major villains: Kraven the Hunter, The Lizard, and Venom.

The Green Goblin, an iconic adversary of Spider-Man, may potentially appear in the game. If not, it is highly probable that he will make an appearance in Spider-Man 3. Insomniac must make a decision on how to portray the Green Goblin, choosing between a tech-focused antagonist or a monstrous creature, while considering the game's emphasis on epic boss battles.

Following in Batman's footsteps, Spider-Man possesses one of the most impressive line-ups of villains in comic book history. Insomniac's Spidey universe has the world at its fingertips, delivering a Spider-Man game on an unprecedented scale. Marvel's Spider-Man took full advantage of this opportunity by featuring some of the Wall-Crawler's greatest adversaries, including the notorious Sinister Six, as well as other iconic enemies like Shocker and Taskmaster. Judging from what fans have seen so far, it appears that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will not squander its chance either.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will prominently feature three significant villains: Kraven the Hunter, The Lizard, and the formidable Venom. While these three villains are bound to dominate Spider-Man 2's main storyline, it is highly likely that several other beloved Spidey villains will make appearances to further enrich the experience. If Insomniac decides to introduce the Green Goblin into the series, a significant design decision will need to be made.

Marvel's Spider-Man's Green Goblin Faces One Big Design Choice

The Game-Changing Dilemma: The Fate of Green Goblin in the Marvel's Spider-Man Series

Debuting in 1964, the Green Goblin quickly became a beloved antagonist among fans, largely because of the mystery surrounding his true identity. Throughout the nearly sixty years since his introduction, the Green Goblin has remained an iconic figure not only in Spider-Man's universe but also in the world of comics as a whole. While various villains have assumed the Green Goblin persona over time, the most familiar and widely recognized depiction is that of Norman Osborn, although even he has two distinct versions that differ significantly from one another.

Undoubtedly, the most renowned portrayal of Norman Osborn's Green Goblin, largely attributed to Willem Dafoe's performance in the original Raimi Spider-Man film, is the tech-based iteration of the character. This particular version of the Goblin typically sports an armored bodysuit, accompanied by an advanced glider and an impressive arsenal comprising pumpkin bombs, razor bats, and drones. However, a close second in popularity is the Ultimate Green Goblin, wherein the character undergoes a monstrous transformation into a colossal, green goblin-like creature following a failed super-soldier experiment.

Insomniac's Spider-Man universe is expected to feature the Green Goblin in some capacity, although it has yet to be confirmed for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Before making a decision, Insomniac will need to determine which version of the Goblin to include. The tech-based Green Goblin is the most likely choice, as evidenced by the character's purple hand grenades in Norman Osborn's office in the first game.

In contrast, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 appears to focus on epic monster boss battles. The trailers suggest that players will participate in a high-stakes chase through New York City to capture The Lizard, and an intense showdown with the enormous Venom is also anticipated. If Insomniac wants to maintain this trend, they could opt for the monstrous Ultimate version of the Green Goblin. However, too many creature battles could become redundant. To provide diversity and capture the iconic essence, it would be preferable for Insomniac's Green Goblin to be a tech-based adversary.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be released October 20 exclusively for PS5.
