The 2016 Daredevil relaunch attempted to introduce a fresh iconic villain for the Man Without Fear in the character of Muse, a frightening street artist with a dark side as a serial killer.
Daredevil has remained one of Marvel's beloved superheroes, with a title that has consistently been in circulation since the 1960s. Despite his enduring popularity, he has not been given many new and memorable adversaries.
He not only confronts some of the most iconic Marvel villains but also engages in epic battles against The Hand and The Kingpin, making Daredevil's stories truly classic.
Nonetheless, there have been efforts to introduce new heroes, such as a menacing street artist who could potentially become the next big thing in the MCU.
Muse’s origin in Daredevil comics explained
The character Muse makes his debut in the Dark Art storyline of 2016. The plot revolves around Daredevil's efforts to juggle his new job as a District Attorney with his responsibilities as a mentor to Blindspot, a young vigilante.
In the Dark Art storyline, Daredevil and Blindspot come across a disturbing painting created using the blood of more than 100 individuals. While attempting to track down the artist responsible for the macabre artwork, they discover an art gallery featuring pieces made from the bodies of deceased Inhumans.
Marvel ComicsMuse, a notorious serial killer and street artist, initially crossed paths with Daredevil during the Dark Art arc in 2016.
The disturbing artwork is the creation of Muse, an enigmatic serial killer who is able to evade Daredevil's heightened senses. He tries to abduct city officials to create a new piece of art but is thwarted by Blindspot. Before Daredevil can intervene, Blindspot is blinded as punishment for his interference.
Muse is eventually captured by the Inhumans but manages to escape following the implementation of anti-vigilante laws in New York by the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk. Blindspot, who has regained his sight through an alliance with The Hand but is falling under the influence of The Beast, challenges Muse by defacing one of his artworks.
Blindspot and Muse were set to battle it out, but Blindspot resisted the control of the Beast and ultimately refused to take his life. Distraught and feeling overshadowed, Muse walked into a burning debris pile, never to return. While he has remained dead, the possibility of his return through The Hand or other methods remains open. Editor's P/S
As a hard fan of Daredevil, I am intrigued by the introduction of Muse as a formidable foe in the 2016 Daredevil relaunch. The concept of a street artist with a dark side as a serial killer adds a unique and unsettling element to Daredevil's world. The character's ability to evade Daredevil's heightened senses and his disturbing artwork made from the blood of victims create a sense of danger and unpredictability.
However, I feel that Muse's potential as a memorable adversary was not fully explored in the Dark Art storyline. His motivations and backstory remained relatively underdeveloped, leaving me wanting more depth and complexity. Additionally, his ultimate fate, walking into a burning debris pile, felt somewhat anticlimactic and left room for questions about his possible return. Despite these reservations, I appreciate the attempt to introduce a fresh villain for Daredevil and believe that with further development, Muse could have become a truly iconic antagonist in the Marvel Comics universe.
