The Reason Behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Enormous File Size

Unveiling the mystery behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's colossal file size, Activision sheds light on the reasons behind the game's massive storage requirements

The campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is now available for players who preordered the game, and those who are preloading it may have noticed that the file size is quite large, potentially reaching 200GB or more, depending on what is already installed. According to Activision, this increase in size is due to the larger amount of content being included at launch, such as map files for Warzone and the Zombies mode, as well as the inclusion of a significant amount of content from Modern Warfare II in Modern Warfare III.

Activision stated that they have made efforts to optimize the final installation size, ensuring it is smaller than the combined size of previous Call of Duty experiences. They also informed users about the option to uninstall specific content using the "manage files" tab in the Call of Duty HQ launcher menu. More information will be provided by Activision soon.

The campaign for Modern Warfare III is currently available in early access, but the official launch date is November 10. This is when the game will be playable for everyone, regardless of preorder status. Additionally, multiplayer will go live on this date, marking the start of the pre-season leading up to Season 1.

Although Microsoft now owns Call of Duty, Modern Warfare III will not be included in Game Pass. Additionally, the game still features exclusive content for PlayStation.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan, I am both excited and a bit overwhelmed by the enormous file size of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. On one hand, I am thrilled to see that the game will include a substantial amount of content at launch, including new maps for Warzone and the Zombies mode, as well as content from Modern Warfare II. This suggests that there will be plenty to explore and experience in the game, which is always a positive thing.

On the other hand, the large file size does raise some concerns for me. With many of us having limited storage space on our consoles and PCs, a 200GB+ game can be a significant chunk of that space. This could potentially prevent some players from being able to install and play the game, which would be a shame. I hope that Activision can find ways to optimize the file size in future updates, making it more accessible to players with limited storage space.
