Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex could have a more significant role in the royal family, as suggested by royal expert Richard Eden.
In a recent article for the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential newsletter, Eden, the editor of the Daily Mail’s Social Diary, mentioned that Louise, 20, and James, 16, may play a crucial part in the family's future.
Eden added that their support will be crucial for their cousin Prince William when he eventually becomes the king.
Prince Edward and Princess Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, are the parents of Louise and James, who are their only children.
Eden believes that encouraging their children to be "working royals" would greatly benefit their country. He hopes that William will understand that a "slimmed-down" monarchy may not protect the institution as some suggest, but could instead make it irrelevant and eventually lead to its demise. According to Eden, injecting energy from young individuals who have been raised with values of public service and duty could strengthen the monarchy.
Eden’s statement comes days after Edward, 60, and Sophie, 59, were asked to lead royal duties for the first time on behalf of King Charles III as he undergoes treatment for cancer. Princess Kate Middleton is also undergoing “preventative chemotherapy” following a cancer diagnosis.
Royal historian Gareth Russell recently weighed in on the future of the “slimmed-down” monarchy during an exclusive interview with We. Russell explained that it was not entirely “a mistake” made by the royal family but this is “not what was intended.”

Here we see Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, James, Earl of Wessex, and Lady Louise Windsor standing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after King Charles III's Coronation. The image captures a moment of celebration and unity within the royal family.
Charles, who is 75 years old, set a goal to streamline the monarchy after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
According to Russell, the monarchy is currently lean, as it was not meant to have reached the extent it did. It was originally planned to have Charles III with three siblings and two children who work, along with their spouses, to establish a stable foundation for the monarchy moving forward.
The working members of the royal family faced losses with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leaving in 2020, and Prince Andrew having his titles stripped in 2022 due to sexual assault allegations (which he denies). This has resulted in the palace appearing to be a bit understaffed.
In line with Eden's thoughts, Russell shared with Us that the monarchy might not be able to sustain itself if Lady Louise does not transition into a senior royal role. He also proposed Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie as potential candidates for such roles.
He added that while the idea of a slimmed-down monarchy seemed good back in the early 2000s when there were many working royals, it now needs to be reconsidered due to various factors.

The article suggests that Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex could play a more significant role in the royal family's future, providing support to Prince William when he becomes king. Royal experts believe that a slimmed-down monarchy may not be the best approach and that injecting energy from young individuals with values of public service and duty could strengthen the institution.
The article highlights the impact of recent events on the monarchy, including the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the stripping of Prince Andrew's titles. These changes have left the palace appearing understaffed, leading some to question the sustainability of a slimmed-down monarchy. The article proposes that Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie could also be considered for senior royal roles, as the monarchy needs to reconsider its approach to ensure its future stability.
