The debate over who the "best girl" is in each anime season is a frequent topic among fans. However, in Oshi no Ko, every female character is expertly crafted and not just a product of biased production. Kana's relentless drive and motivation to succeed, Ruby's passionate pursuit of the arts, Memcho's humorous and supportive nature, Miyako's maternal guidance of the Hoshino siblings, and Akane's perceptive and vigilant persona all contribute to a cast of exceptional women.
For our main character, Aqua however, there may only be one who's a better match for his love life; let alone one who can deal with the "true" him.
Wordplay and Mind Games
Akane possesses a unique ability to read people and connect pieces of information, despite her limited knowledge. Her shy nature initially led her to quietly observe those around her, honing her perception skills. During her investigation of Ai, Akane discerned that Ai had a hidden past, which possibly included a lover and a pregnancy that explained her extended absence. Akane also has a logical mindset, as evidenced by her deduction of Aqua's true feelings when he confided in her about his vengeance issues. She detected inconsistencies in his story and realized his subconscious desire for happiness prevented him from acknowledging the truth about his father. Not only is Akane adept at reading Aqua, but she is also aware of his tendencies, even if she cannot always predict his next move.
The Middle (Wo)man
Akane is able to see both sides of the story and places herself in a neutral position. Despite her intention to kill Hikaru, Aqua's father, to prevent him from taking the blame, she recognizes that Ai likely doesn't hold any resentment towards her killer, as stated in chapter 116. In contrast, Aqua and Ruby are consumed with grief and resentment, causing them to focus solely on what they have lost. This realization prompts Akane to take action and prevent Aqua from self-destructing. True care means preventing loved ones from making wrong decisions, rather than enabling them. Her empathy allows her to understand that revenge leads to no winners.
Akane's youthfulness sometimes makes her naive, but she balances it out with her logical and calculated approach, especially in her methodical acting technique. This involves researching and immersing herself in her character's role before performing, allowing her to effectively portray the character and even improvise during filming. Aqua also employs a similar technique by mimicking the behavior of those around him to gain their favor. However, their similar approach to acting causes tension in their relationship.
Raw Emotion
Aqua initially used Akane to learn more about the acting school where Ai met his father. However, after Aqua declares his vengeance no longer necessary, he decides to stay with Akane and focus on nurturing their relationship. Akane is the only person Aqua confides in about his feelings, and ironically, he was the one who listened to and comforted her before their roles reversed. Despite their mutual efforts, Aqua's trust issues eventually led to their breakup. It is evident that Aqua is not in a good place to be in a relationship, but if he ever decides to come around, Akane will be there to support him.
