In The Nun II, producer James Wan sheds light on the reunion of returning characters Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet). The conclusion of The Nun in 2018 hinted that Frenchie had become possessed by Valak, the main demon antagonist of The Conjuring Universe. Taking place four years later, the sequel follows Irene as she confronts the demon once again, now residing within Frenchie.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wan elaborated on how Irene and Frenchie come together in The Nun II. The creator of The Conjuring Universe shared their initial whereabouts at the beginning of the film and explained the circumstances that lead to their reunion. Read Wan's explanation below:

Everything To Expect From The Nun II
: Frenchie has moved on from the first film and finds himself employed as a groundskeeper-handyman in a Catholic school. However, it is evident that the malevolent presence still lingers within him, gradually resurfacing. Recognizing that he can rely on no one else, Frenchie reaches out to Taissa Farmiga's character for assistance. A beautiful platonic friendship blossoms between them as she genuinely cares for his well-being and is determined to offer her full support. Simultaneously, she must confront the returning evil and engage in another battle against it.The demon Valak, in the form of the titular character The Nun, will once again be faced by Irene and Frenchie in The Nun II. Joining the cast of this installment in The Conjuring universe are newcomers Storm Reid (Missing) and Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). With a scheduled release date of September 8, 2023, audiences can look forward to The Nun II hitting theaters just in time for the Halloween season.
As The Nun II belongs to The Conjuring Universe, it is expected to include references to previous films, such as The Conjuring trilogy and the Annabelle trilogy. The previous Nun movie connected with The Conjuring by revealing that Frenchie was possessed in a video featured in the film. As Valak still resides within Frenchie in The Nun II, it is possible that this installment may not have a happy ending for Irene and the new characters.
Being the first film in The Conjuring universe since The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 2021, which was released in both theaters and on HBO Max, The Nun II holds significant importance. It will be the first exclusively theatrical release in the Conjuring Universe since the COVID-19 pandemic, and its success at the box office will have a significant impact on the future of the franchise. With the return of Irene, Frenchie, and Valak, The Nun II marks a significant return to the big screen for The Conjuring Universe.
