The Stargate opens a portal to the enigmatic realm of the Tollan, a resilient human race that originated from the desolate clutches of their namesake planet in the Milky Way galaxy. Driven by unwavering determination, they sought solace in Tollana, a beacon of hope amidst the harsh cosmos. However, fate cruelly denied them respite, as their newfound sanctuary was destroyed, forcing the Tollan into heartbreaking exile once more.
Forged through the crucible of adversity, the Tollan possessed an inherent brilliance that distinguished them from other species. Their intellectual prowess, honed through countless periods of introspection, led to remarkable technological achievements. They utilized their knowledge as a formidable weapon and seamlessly integrated their inventions into their societal fabric. From the depths of their collective consciousness, they conjured marvels that defied the limitations of their mortal existence, relentlessly pushing the boundaries of human potential.
Background & Origin
The Tollan civilization emerged as an advanced society within the Stargate franchise, surpassing even human achievements at their peak. They possessed mind-boggling technology capable of bending reality itself. However, this brilliance was not without its drawbacks. These beings were renowned for their intelligence and creativity, but beneath their façade of ingenuity, an intriguing trait was ingrained in their DNA: arrogance. They saw themselves as the supreme rulers of the universe, looking down upon lesser beings with disdain.
Yet, hidden beneath their grandiosity, a complex society operated under the rule of the Curia, a group of self-righteous Tollan officials situated in their lofty ivory towers. They preached peace as their guiding principle, advocating for harmony and tranquility. However, their actions contradicted their high ideals. A deep-rooted xenophobic tendency fueled their aversion to engage in trade and interact with other species. They selfishly clung to their advanced technology, treating it as a precious treasure amassed through greed. In their jealous quest to safeguard their secrets, they rejected the notion of progress through shared knowledge.
Relationship With Earth
The Tollan, despite their stubbornness, experienced a change of heart due to unforeseen circumstances. This led them to reconsider their decision to isolate themselves and instead form an unexpected alliance with Earth.
Desperate and facing a powerful enemy known as the Goa'uld System Lords, the Tollan's once unbeatable technological superiority became useless. The crucial moment that determined their survival occurred in the Stargate SG-1 episode "Pretense." It was then that they grasped the reality that their advanced technology, which had once made them exceptional, was not enough to save them. Consequently, they turned to Earth for assistance. The consequences of their arrogance became evident in the episode "Between Two Fires," as their civilization suffered greatly, forcing them to acknowledge that they were no longer able to stand alone.
United by a shared recognition of vulnerability and a united fight against a mutual adversary, a pact was established between Earth and the Tollan. The episode "Enigma" portrayed the intricate negotiations that ensued as both sides navigated the treacherous realms of diplomacy and forged bonds of trust.
Destruction Of Tollana
After the cataclysms on Tollan led to their forced exodus, the Tollan found refuge on another planet known as Tollana. Despite their initial lack of a Stargate, they received assistance from the Nox to successfully construct one. Rapidly developing cities and fortifying them with advanced defenses, they aimed to establish their new homeland. Unfortunately, in August 2001, a Goa'uld named Tanith, who was loyal to Anubis, adapted his ship's shields to withstand the Tollans' ion cannons. This alteration pushed the Tollans into servitude under Tanith's master. However, SG-1 intervened and foiled Tanith's plan. In retaliation, Tanith mercilessly destroyed Tollana, causing the tragic loss of life for the majority of its inhabitants.
In the episodes "Pretense" and "Between Two Fires," the Tollans undergo a harrowing journey, manipulated and trapped in a deadly conflict. This tale of tragedy and resilience becomes ingrained in their collective memory.
The heartbreaking downfall of Tollana serves as a poignant example of how unbridled ambition can lead to destruction, highlighting the consequences of neglecting the world. The Tollan people's suffering serves as a reminder that even the most advanced civilizations cannot flourish without empathy, collaboration, and the humility to learn from others.
Stargate’s Legacy
Roland Emmerich's film Stargate, released in 1994, did not perform well at the box office, earning only $71 million worldwide against a $55 million budget. Despite this setback, MGM decided to persist with the Stargate intellectual property and introduced the television series Stargate SG-1 in 1997. Over the course of 10 seasons, the show proved to be a tremendous success, paving the way for further expansion of the Stargate universe. Stargate Atlantis premiered in 2004, following SG-1's seventh-season finale and eighth-season premiere. While SG-1 came to an end in 2007, Atlantis continued until 2009. In that same year, Stargate Universe premiered, but unfortunately, it only lasted for two seasons before concluding.
