Nocturnal, the Daedric Prince of Night and Darkness, holds a prominent position as the patron of the Thieves Guild, making her one of the most well-known among the Daedric Princes. The luck of all thieves stems from her. The enigmatic Nightingales, who are the leaders of the Thieves Guild, deeply serve her in Tamriel, even in death, as she claims their souls. Nocturnal, like other Daedric Princes, is associated with several significant artifacts, including the Skeleton Key found in Skyrim. Given her role as the patron of thieves, it is common for her esteemed objects to be stolen, including one particularly famous artifact that is likely to make an appearance in The Elder Scrolls 6.
In contrast to Skyrim, the leader of the Thieves Guild in Cyrodiil is not a Nightingale. Instead, the guild is overseen by the Gray Fox, a renowned figure who has existed for centuries. Notably, the Gray Fox infamously stole the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal from the Daedric Prince. This Cowl holds sacred importance to Nocturnal and is rumored to grant invisibility to the wearer, although its true effects surpass this ability. Thieves have coveted this Cowl for generations, and its presence in The Elder Scrolls 6 would undoubtedly be highly advantageous.
The History of The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal in Cyrodiil
Master thief Emer Dareloth stole the Cowl, which resulted in Nocturnal placing a curse on it. This curse erased the wearer from history, making them a stranger to anyone who knew them, regardless of whether they renounced the Cowl or passed it on. This posed a problem for owners of the Cowl, particularly the leader of the Thieves Guild, as they would always be struck from history once they put it on.
Due to the curse, those who used the Cowl were compelled to adopt the identity of the Gray Fox exclusively. This meant that their true identity became completely obscured, and they were unable to assume a civilian persona. As a result, they became strangers to everyone who was familiar with them. The events of the Thieves Guild storyline eventually broke the curse, allowing mortals to possess and control the Cowl.
The Gray Fox's Potential in The Elder Scrolls 6
The wearer of the Cowl is granted complete anonymity, as any wrongdoings committed while wearing it are attributed to the Gray Fox rather than the individual. This means that any bounties or crimes accumulated by the character are wiped away once the Cowl is removed. Since the player acquires the Cowl after the curse is lifted, they receive all the benefits of being the Gray Fox without any drawbacks.
Out of all the Daedric artifacts, the Cowl of Nocturnal is the most valuable. It surpasses even Nocturnal's other item, the Skeleton Key, which becomes unnecessary once the player character reaches a certain level in lockpicking and must be returned to Nocturnal to complete the Thieves Guild quest line in Skyrim. Since the Cowl of Nocturnal is typically possessed by mortals, there is no need to return it to Nocturnal and no reason why it should not be present in The Elder Scrolls 6.
The intersection of the Gray Fox and the Nightingale stories presents an intriguing conflict for the Thieves Guild in The Elder Scrolls 6. It also offers the chance to reintroduce a beloved character from Skyrim, something both players and NPCs have been eager to see. Given the legendary status of the Gray Fox in Elder Scrolls lore, a return in Hammerfell would likely be well-received by players, particularly if it involves outsmarting Nocturnal once more. Currently, The Elder Scrolls 6 is under development.
