To get a good laugh, it's worth reflecting on some of the hilariously absurd monsters that the Power Rangers have battled against over the years. Throughout its 20 different versions, Power Rangers focuses on a group of teenagers who transform into powerful warriors and are tasked with defeating strange monsters. The series began in 1993, gaining immense popularity with Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with the nostalgic Netflix special, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always.
The most unforgettable monsters in the series primarily originated from the initial installment, which heavily relied on footage from the Japanese series Super Sentai for its monster battles. In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the mischievous sorceress Rita Repulsa and the menacing Lord Zedd were the masterminds behind the creation of these comically absurd monsters that appeared on a weekly basis. Using everyday objects found on Earth, Rita and Zedd would infuse them with intelligence and deadly weapons, resulting in these creatures wreaking havoc in the city of Angel Grove. Regardless of their abilities, all these monster designs embody the playful and imaginative essence that has allowed Power Rangers to captivate audiences for decades.
10 Brick Bully
9 Gnarly Gnome
Introducing Brick Bully, who made his debut appearance in "Another Brick in The Wall," an episode in season 3 of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. This particular monster proved to be quite unique, as his physical form was that of an anthropomorphized brick wall. His face would undergo a peculiar transformation, alternating between an upside-down mask and a toothy mouth devoid of eyes. Brick Bully came into existence when Rita Repulsa unintentionally struck a brick wall with her monster-transformation staff. In battle against the Rangers, he utilized brick-shaped lasers that emanated from his hands. These lasers possessed the alarming ability to transform individuals into bricks, which perfectly complemented his other formidable power: the aptitude to summon brick walls.
In the season 1 episode titled "Different Drum," an unexpected character named Gnarly Gnome made his one and only appearance in the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers series. Despite the name, Gnarly Gnome bore no resemblance to the traditional image of a gnome. Instead, the character seemed to draw inspiration from the popular '90s Trolls Dolls trend, all while maintaining a unique and separate identity. Portrayed as a Viking, Gnarly Gnome wielded unconventional weapons such as a rake and an accordion in his formidable arsenal. Along with the ability to unleash bolts of lightning from his horns, Gnarly Gnome possessed the power of invisibility, a skill that could have proven especially advantageous in his battles against the Rangers.
8 Pursehead
7 Turkey Jerk
Pursehead personified his name quite fittingly, with his head resembling a purse. To be more precise, his head was the very purse belonging to the Pink Ranger's mother, which Rita Repulsa transformed in the episode "2 for One" from the second season of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. The assortment of weapons at Pursehead's disposal originated from the contents of the purse prior to its alteration. Among the notable items were a colossal dental floss, a club fashioned from a cotton swab, and a compact mirror with the capacity to emit psychic laser beams.
Bulk and Skull taking their creepiness to a whole new level on Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers was captured when they created Turkey Jerk, an eerie cyborg turkey. Making its debut in season 2's “Storybook Rangers Part 2," this monstrous creation was inspired by Darth Vader and wielded a peculiar weapon that resembled a mix of a ray gun and a turkey baster. With the baster gun and explosive cranberry bombs, Turkey Jerk allegedly posed a serious threat to the entirety of Angel Grove. Fortunately, the Rangers delivered a decisive blow to Turkey Jerk, neutralizing the danger it presented.
6 Mr. Ticklesneezer
Mr. Ticklesneezer, a grotesque doll-like creature with a leprechaun-inspired appearance, unleashed chaos upon Angel Grove in the first season episode of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers titled "For Whom The Bell Trolls." Previously owned by the Yellow Ranger, Trini, this repulsive creature was brought to life by the nefarious Rita Repulsa. Equipped with the ability to shrink objects and store them within glass bottles, Mr. Ticklesneezer unexpectedly turned out to be one of the more rational monsters terrorizing the town. Despite his mischief of bottling up trains and buildings, Trini managed to convince him to restore everything to its original state and revert back into a harmless doll.
5 Pumpkin Rapper
The Power Rangers first encountered the Pumpkin Rapper in the episode "Trick or Treat" during the first season of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. This aptly named villain featured an upside-down pumpkin as a head and possessed the unique ability to speak solely in rhymes. Additionally, Pumpkin Rapper summoned an army of pumpkins, launched pumpkin bombs at the Rangers, and unleashed energy rings from his eye. The crafty character even had the capacity to transform into a regular pumpkin, showcasing his remarkable disguising skills. Lord Zedd, the iconic antagonist, resurrected Pumpkin Rapper on numerous occasions, making him a notable favorite.
4 Chunky Chicken
In season 1 episode "Big Sisters" of The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, the Rangers confronted an adversary named Chunky Chicken. According to the Power Rangers Wiki, Chunky Chicken was characterized by his robust physique and his resemblance to a chicken. This larger-than-life and vibrant poultry threat was equipped with a pair of garden shears that possessed the ability to penetrate various dimensions. Despite this extraordinary capability, Chunky Chicken primarily employed the shears as a close-quarters weapon. Eventually, the costume of Chunky Chicken was repurposed for the cybernetic Turkey Jerk.
3 Slob Goblin
Slob Goblin made his debut in the less popular Power Rangers Ninja Storm episode titled "Tongue and Cheek." He was designed to resemble a Japanese mailbox and possessed a powerful yet peculiar weapon in the form of his tongue. This unruly appendage enabled him to ensnare and deliver shocking jolts to his adversaries. Interestingly, if this monstrous mailbox happened to lick someone, they would undergo a transformation into a stamp. Futhermore, Slob Goblin proved to be both a menacing and relentless foe due to his ability to teleport, emit energy beams, and effortlessly summon vast armies. These remarkable attributes solidified his status as a formidable and recurring adversary throughout Ninja Storm.
2 Frankenstein Monster
1 Crabby Cabbie
In the first season episode titled "Life's a Masquerade," the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers introduced a character known as Frankenstein Monster. This version of the classic monster, inspired by Mary Shelley's iconic horror tale and the 1931 Boris Karloff film, featured a distinctive appearance. Sporting a suit with shoulder pads and detachable neck bolts, Frankenstein Monster stood out from Shelley's cautionary story about human ambition. To further set him apart, the character emitted a menacing red mist from his mouth and brandished a formidable hammer-and-chain weapon. In the season 3 episode "Follow That Cab!" of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, an incident occurs when Lord Zedd uses his powers to zap a taxi that Pink Ranger Kimberley and her antagonists Bulk and Skull were sitting in, resulting in them being trapped inside the mutated vehicle. The monstrous automobile is operated by a sword-wielding, Minion-like creature who speaks with a stereotypical New York accent. Despite initially being defeated, Crabby Cabbie later equips a massive cannon on his back and seeks revenge against the Power Rangers' main team. However, he is ultimately defeated once again.
