WWE superstar, The Miz, recently shared his thoughts on not being cast as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Despite The Miz's physical resemblance to the character and his open desire to portray him, the role ultimately went to Karl Urban, known for his role in The Boys. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, The Miz expressed his disappointment in not landing the part but also expressed his excitement to see Urban in the role. Read his response below:
"I have always been a huge fan of the character Johnny Cage, so when I realized he wasn't included, I was really disappointed. However, towards the end, there was a hint that he might appear in part two, episode two. Then, when the release happened, my name was trending alongside Johnny Cage. It was surreal to see that it was actually my name and not just a bunch of people. I couldn't believe it."
"I immediately called my agent and expressed my strong desire to play the role. I was willing to do whatever it took to get it. I even launched a campaign, mentioning in every interview that I wanted to be Johnny Cage. Unfortunately, I never got an audition, which was okay. Maybe they just didn't see me fitting into the character. Later on, I found out that Karl Urban had gotten the part, and I was genuinely amazed. People asked if I was upset or angry, but I never feel that way when someone else gets a role I wanted. I am wholeheartedly supportive and believe that whoever gets the role will work just as hard as I would to bring the character to life and satisfy the audience's expectations and love for the character."
"I've seen Karl Urban in The Boys and I believe he is a fantastic actor. I have no doubt that he will excel as Johnny Cage, and I am definitely going to watch it."
"Am I disappointed that I didn't get the opportunity to play Johnny Cage? Absolutely. But that's just how life goes. You have to accept the ups and downs. In Hollywood, there's always fierce competition for one role. There are countless individuals vying for that same part, and unfortunately, I didn't get it. This is a common occurrence in the industry. However, I will persevere and continue to pursue roles that I find meaningful. Hopefully, one day, I'll achieve the level of success that Cena, Batista, and The Rock have reached."
Why Miz Was Such A Popular Choice For Johnny Cage
Miz's potential casting as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat was acknowledged by Ed Boon, co-creator of the game, who recognized the strong case the former WWE champion made. Even before the Mortal Kombat reboot premiered, Miz was consistently suggested as a suitable choice for the role, which likely played a role in him being considered for the part. In addition to his physical resemblance, Miz also based his WWE character on Cage and shared some similarities in real life.
One notable instance was during 2014-2015, when Miz's on-screen persona drew inspiration from the beloved video game character. With his sunglasses, charismatic smile, and inflated ego, the similarities were hard to miss. On a personal level, Miz, initially underestimated and dismissed by opponents due to his reality television background before joining WWE, could have drawn from these experiences to bring Cage to life in Mortal Kombat 2.
The meta-narrative of someone striving and succeeding in securing the role adds an extra layer of excitement to Mortal Kombat 2. Urban, as confirmed by Miz, will impeccably portray the character once filming resumes post-strikes. However, it would have been intriguing for Miz to have landed this significant role in his debut project instead of an established actor associated with multiple franchises.
