Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Loki season 2, episode 1
Summary
In the TVA, time holds no significance as the organization operates beyond the constraints of time and space, granting its agents the ability to live for countless centuries. However, the expansion of the multiverse poses a threat to the TVA, leading to power surges and the potential overload of the Time Loom.
The central storyline of Loki season 2 revolves around the mission to save the Time Variance Authority from the disruptive effects of time itself.
Continuing the thrilling adventures of the enigmatic God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston), Loki season 2 delves deeper into the labyrinthine corridors of the Time Variance Authority. The season premiere unveils intriguing revelations concerning the unique concept of time within the TVA. After encountering He Who Remains in the previous season's finale, Loki is returned to the TVA by Sylvie, only to discover a strikingly transformed version of the organization. Now, Loki season 2 offers fresh insights into the intriguing mechanisms that govern the temporal realm within the TVA.
In the premiere of Loki season 2, an interesting revelation is made regarding the reason why nobody recognized Loki in the finale of Loki season 1. It turns out that Loki has been "time-slipping" and his physical body has been uncontrollably and violently transported between the past, present, and future. Surprisingly, this phenomenon should not be possible within the Time Variance Authority (TVA), as explained by Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Ouroboros, also known as O.B. (Ke Huy Quan), the head of Repairs and Advancement at the TVA. This sheds light on the insignificance of time within the TVA.
The TVA Exists Outside Of Time
The main reason time does not hold significance within the TVA is because the entire organization operates outside the conventional limitations of time and space. This ability allows its agents to lead extraordinarily long lives and work for extended periods, as evidenced by Mobius and O.B. not having seen each other for over four centuries. As Agent Mobius has emphasized on multiple occasions, "Time functions differently in the TVA." Utilizing advanced technology like TemPads, the TVA possesses the capability to enter and exit specific moments in time throughout different realities, ensuring the preservation and safeguarding of the Sacred Timeline.
How The Multiverse Is Affecting The TVA
With Loki season 2 unfolding, an intriguing aspect awaits exploration—the origins of the TVA and its construction by He Who Remains within the confines of time and space. However, unearthing this information might prove challenging after the revelation that most TVA agents regularly underwent mind wipes, erasing their memories of past lives as variants and the true purpose behind the maintenance of the Sacred Timeline. Furthermore, the permeation of time itself appears to be encroaching upon the Time Variance Authority, now that He Who Remains has met his demise and the multiverse has unshackled itself, giving rise to new divergent realities.Ever since the multiverse began expanding, the TVA has been grappling with power surges. Additionally, the TVA's Time Loom is in danger of overloading. Originally designed to fashion a physical timeline from raw temporal energy, the Loom was evidently ill-equipped to handle the sudden influx of new branch timelines. Consequently, O.B. is compelled to secure the machine and initiate necessary modifications to prevent the potential destruction of the entire TVA.
Similarly, Loki's ability to manipulate time is undoubtedly linked to the recent expansion of the multiverse. Additionally, there have been hints that Sylvie's use of He Who Remains' TemPad in season 1 may have caused this temporal affliction. However, it appears that the main storyline of Loki season 2 will revolve around rescuing the TVA from the clutches of time.
