God Of War: Ragnarok's aftermath has created numerous possibilities for the future of the franchise. While the game's story serves as an emotional conclusion to Kratos' journey, it also presents multiple opportunities for further exploration.
One particularly intriguing direction would be to delve into Atreus' future journeys in the upcoming God of War installment. As he and his father go their separate ways by the end of the game, there is great potential in discovering where his newfound adventures lead him. However, if Santa Monica Studio chooses to revisit his character, they must prioritize consistent character development across the games.
Atreus Likely Needs to be Aged Up Again Significantly
While a God of War: Ragnarok successor may choose to place Atreus in either a protagonist or supporting role, it would likely be necessary to portray him as a fully matured adult, as the previous game showed his growth over several years. Introducing a potential prologue depicting Atreus in his younger years after the conclusion of the previous title could be feasible, but the majority of his character development should occur when he has reached full adulthood.
One compelling reason for this approach is the probability of Sunny Suljic reprising his role as Atreus, which would almost certainly involve portraying an adult version of the character. Suljic himself expressed interest in returning as Atreus in an interview, further indicating his desire to embody the character in the next God of War installment. Additionally, from a logistical standpoint, it would be illogical for Suljic to play Atreus as a teenager again, as the actor is roughly the same age as the character and it may seem odd for him to portray a younger version of Atreus once more.
The next time players catch a glimpse of Atreus shouldn't be limited to him as a teenage version. Progressing several years forward allows for a showcasing of his growth and development. Apart from the obvious physical changes, his personality would have matured further beyond what was seen at the end of Ragnarok, regardless of whether he delves deeper into his mischievous god abilities or not.
Considering that Atreus and Angrboda embark on a journey to locate any remaining Giants at the conclusion of the game, it is only natural for such an ambitious quest to take years as they venture into realms governed by other mythologies. Assuming this remains their objective in the next installment, the plot can center around the idea of their eventual reunion with more of their people.
Depending on whether he maintained contact with other survivors of Ragnarok, there is potential to explore the whereabouts of different characters, even if it's just through a simple note. This could also serve as a smooth transition to hint at a God of War spinoff that doesn't focus on Kratos or Atreus.
Another reason a time jump would be ideal is to showcase Atreus's growth as a warrior. Already skilled with a bow and having gained control over his transformation abilities in Ragnarok, it is undeniable that he would have further evolved in these areas. If he were to have a game centered around him, playing as a more experienced Atreus would be far more captivating than one who simply relies on moves from the previous installment.
An adult Atreus as the main character in a God of War game could be the next step in the series, following the long-standing presence of Kratos. With players taking control of a new type of deity, the game's title may be altered to showcase Atreus' unique abilities, further emphasizing his independence from his father.
