The release of God of War 2018 marked a significant shift for the franchise, with a renewed focus on themes, story, character development, and gameplay. While the previous hack-and-slash, power fantasy style was beloved by fans, the decision to adopt a third-person, over-the-shoulder camera angle with gameplay reminiscent of the Souls series brought a refreshing change. With God of War Ragnarok, Santa Monica continued to build on this foundation, introducing new mechanics and systems that took the series in exciting new directions. Notably, the addition of a third weapon for Kratos and a fresh approach to open-world and puzzle design should carry over to future installments.
The Next God of War Should Keep Ragnarok's Approach to Weapons
The God of War franchise has always boasted an impressive arsenal of weapons that are both satisfying and iconic. The Blades of Chaos, a series staple, remain a fan-favorite with their powerful swings and throws, while God of War 2's Blade of Olympus offers a brief but memorable power trip. The Leviathan Axe, introduced in God of War 2018, is the new main attraction with its frost powers that complement the Blades' fiery attacks.
However, God of War Ragnarok takes things to the next level by introducing a third weapon - the Draupnir Spear - which could potentially be one of the greatest God of War weapons of all time. Using wind-based powers, the Draupnir Spear offers players a completely different moveset and ability tree to invest in. Its core mechanic of dislodging and sticking itself into an opponent before exploding makes for a satisfying and impactful addition to the gameplay formula.
God of War Ragnarok not only introduced the Draupnir Spear as a new combat option but also added puzzles based on the three core weapons, which was one of the best additions to the gameplay formula. It scattered environmental challenges throughout the open-world, requiring players to use the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and the Draupnir Spear in unique and engaging ways to solve puzzles, building off the few present in its predecessor. These puzzles can be very rewarding, offering players worthwhile gear or upgrade material for their efforts. Additionally, God of War Ragnarok interwove its weapons with its level design, allowing players to access hidden areas by using each weapon to destroy specific obstacles such as vines and walls. By doing so, it creates a strong bond between the player and their tools, which is crucial in an action-oriented game with only three weapons. If the next God of War game follows a similar approach, it should adopt this same method of weapon integration.
God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
