Grinding Gear Games surprised fans with the official "Ngamakanui" teaser trailer dropped on June 8 as part of Summer Game Fest, after not revealing much about Path of Exile 2 since its announcement in 2019. The Path of Exile franchise has been heavily anticipated by fans, with the original game receiving positive feedback from fans of the Diablo series and other hack-and-slash games when it debuted in 2013. Some saw it as a replacement for Diablo 3, thanks to its unique economy and trading systems. However, the new teaser may present challenges for Grinding Gear Games moving forward.
Path of Exile 2 Needs to Make a Statement
The latest video showcasing the top-down action-RPG is just over a minute long and features noticeably enhanced animations and higher-tier spells. Set twenty years after Kitava's demise, the plot centers on the Atlas of Worlds, an endgame system previously introduced. Although the trailer builds upon the original game's foundations, some have questioned whether it should be deemed a sequel or simply an additional campaign to Path of Exile.
However, with the recent release of Diablo 4 and the trailer's brevity, Grinding Gear Games may not attract the desired audience. The gameplay of Diablo 4 has already revealed the age of the first Path of Exile, and while the latest trailer shows promise, some are questioning if it is enough. After all, Diablo 4 garnered extremely positive reviews upon its launch in 2019.
The upcoming trailer for Path of Exile 2 could benefit from highlighting the game's latest features, such as the absence of fusing orbs, the addition of customizable characters, and the 19 new Ascendancy classes - twice the number currently available in-game. With the inclusion of an eighth class, these new features are just a few of the reasons why the Path of Exile community is eagerly anticipating the game's release. While the in-game footage shown at ExileCon in 2019 generated a lot of excitement, the developers have been fairly tight-lipped since then.
Fortunately, fans of the original game need not worry - Path of Exile 2 will maintain its core gameplay and economy. The rich world of Wraeclast, with its dark and compelling lore, will still be fully explorable, even though two decades have passed in-game. Grinding Gear Games has also reassured players that any purchases made in the first Path of Exile will carry over to the free-to-play sequel.
As the release date for Path of Exile 2 is set for 2024, there is still much to be unveiled about the game. Fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming ExileCon on July 29-30, where more information is expected to be revealed. While players are hopeful for an announcement regarding an open beta release date, nothing has been confirmed. In the meantime, Diablo 4 players are enjoying its endgame content, including subsequent World Tier content, which could provide a satisfying challenge until Path of Exile 2's release. It's worth noting that both games are unique in their own ways. Path of Exile 2 is currently being developed for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
