Regarding the controversy surrounding Season 1 of Diablo 4, Grinding Gear Games developers express empathy towards Blizzard and acknowledge the difficulty in transitioning to a seasonal format.

Path of Exile and Diablo have mutually benefitted from one another's presence, with Path of Exile serving as a sanctuary for Diablo enthusiasts during the troubled period of Diablo 3.

Considering the backlash that Diablo 4 has encountered due to its recent design decisions, the ultimate resolution rests in Blizzard's control. Path of Exile 2, along with the broader hack-and-slash genre, may offer valuable insights and feedback to help address these concerns.

Grinding Gear Games recently showcased their vision for Path of Exile 2, while also shedding light on the challenges facing Diablo 4 in a recent interview. Despite being considered rivals in the gaming community, Path of Exile and Diablo have benefitted from each other's presence. Path of Exile was created out of admiration for Diablo 2 and served as a refuge for many Diablo fans during the turbulent times of Diablo 3.

Over time, Reaper of Souls and Path of Exile became two successful pillars of the genre with contrasting philosophies. Now, Path of Exile 2 and Diablo 4 mark the next generation of this camaraderie. The highly-anticipated sequel, Path of Exile 2, is streamlining the systems of its predecessor and will have a Closed Beta in Summer 2024. In contrast, Diablo 4 recently released its first post-release content, Season of the Malignant, but the player response has been less than favorable.

In an interview conducted by IGN during ExileCon 2023, director Jonathan Rogers addressed the criticism that Blizzard had been receiving for its recent design choices. He acknowledged that running a live-service title with a Season format presented a challenging learning curve. Chris Wilson added that developers sometimes reassess certain features of their game and opt for a slower pace. While this may provide insight into the ongoing controversy surrounding Diablo 4, the ultimate responsibility for finding a resolution lies in the hands of Blizzard.

Rogers expressed sympathy for the developers of Diablo 4 and acknowledged that while he believes their approach can be successful, it is not his personal preference. He compared Diablo 4 to Path of Exile 2, noting that the former is moving towards being an MMO while the latter is not. Diablo 4 embraces longer cooldowns and a vast open world, which differs from the design philosophy of Path of Exile 2.

Path of Exile 2, on the other hand, focuses more on intense combat with a hardcore element. Players will have full control of their characters and can react accordingly to any situation without having to manage cooldowns. Rogers hopes that the team will achieve a good balance during the Closed Beta, considering the reputation of Path of Exile for undergoing balance adjustments. Although Diablo 4 fans will have to wait over a year for the game to release, Path of Exile 2 may serve as valuable feedback for Blizzard due to the strong presence of both franchises in the hack-and-slash genre.

Path of Exile 2 is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
