The Mind-Blowing Link Between Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Jurassic Park

Unearthed by Majora's Mask's art director, the captivating link between the game's legendary title and Jurassic Park unveils an intriguing connection

The art director of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask has revealed an unexpected connection between Jurassic Park and the game's title. Although the title refers to the mask featured in the adventure, the developer has explained the specific origin of this intriguing name.

The Legend of Zelda series has been around for a considerable amount of time, starting with the release of the original Zelda game on the NES in 1986. Since then, the franchise has produced multiple games for various Nintendo consoles. These games have several distinguishing factors, and one notable aspect is their titles. While the series boasts many iconic game titles, one of the most captivating is The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Recently, a developer shed light on the origins of the N64 game's name, revealing it to be one of the darker Zelda adventures released throughout the years.

In a recent interview with VGC, Takaya Imamura, the art director for Majora’s Mask, provided further insights into the game's development, particularly regarding the origin of its title. Imamura disclosed that he drew inspiration from the 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, as he was an ardent admirer of the film. He aimed to incorporate elements of Jurassic Park into the game's title, resulting in the fusion of a portion of his own name with the first segment of the film's title directed by Steven Spielberg. Imamura explained, "‘Ima-Jura’… that’s where the name came from."

This news is intriguing as it contrasts previous comments made by Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma regarding the origin of Majora's Mask's name. Aonuma had stated that the name was a combination of Imamura's name and the title of another movie, Jumanji. While both explanations are interesting, Imamura's seems to align more closely with the game's Japanese name, Mujura's Mask.

It is worth noting that the VGC interview with Imamura covered more than just the origins of Majora's Mask's name. In addition, the developer briefly discussed his desire to work on another game in the Zelda series. Despite retiring from Nintendo in 2021 without getting the opportunity to contribute to another Zelda game, Imamura expressed his aspiration to create something different from recent games in the franchise. He mentioned wanting to make a "strange and unique world," similar to the one found in Majora's Mask.
