Warning: Spoilers ahead for Mortal Kombat 1.
Despite some drawbacks, Mortal Kombat 1 is an exceptional game. Although the Nintendo Switch port is visually unappealing and Megan Fox’s portrayal of Nitara has faced deserving criticism, there are many aspects to admire about the game. The introduction of the Kameo system has brought a fresh and intriguing twist to gameplay, while the improved graphics have elevated the overall look of the series. Additionally, the inclusion of a compelling story mode has allowed previously overlooked characters like Reptile and Baraka to showcase their potential. With regards to the narrative, Mortal Kombat 1 presents an interesting narrative choice involving the canonicity of its predecessor, and this is a decision that Injustice 3 could potentially replicate.
In Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath DLC, an unexpected decision was made during the final fight. Players were given the option to choose between Fire God Liu Kang or the scheming antagonist Shang Tsung. The winner of this battle would determine the course of Mortal Kombat's new universe. While it was enjoyable to speculate about the potential actions of Shang Tsung with boundless power, most assumed that Liu Kang's ending would be considered the canon and the story would progress from there. However, Mortal Kombat 1 proved that both endings in MK11 were equally valid. This demonstrates that the final choice in Injustice 2 could hold significant weight in determining the outcome of Injustice 3's story.
Injustice 3 Can Make Both Endings Official Like Mortal Kombat 1
Once players have invested a substantial amount of time into the storyline of Mortal Kombat 1, a surprising twist occurs. It is revealed that Shang Tsung, who has disguised himself as the main antagonist in Mortal Kombat 11, has actually been pulling the strings all along. Specifically, he takes on the form of the powerful Titan variant who defeated Liu Kang in the MK11 Aftermath expansion. Shang Tsung has traveled from his own successful universe to wreak havoc in the Mortal Kombat timeline. This introduces an entertaining multiverse narrative, a concept that DC Comics is well-versed in due to their numerous elseworlds and alternate timeline stories.
Throughout the years, DC Comics has introduced a multitude of alternate realities and timelines. From Earth Prime and the Metal universe to Earth-Two and the world of Flashpoint, they have crafted a wide array of captivating elseworlds. One such example is the Injustice franchise, which delves into a timeline where Superman's sanity unravels after the tragic death of Lois Lane. Consumed by grief, Superman takes matters into his own hands and eliminates The Joker, setting in motion his pursuit of complete control over Metropolis and the entire planet. However, his authoritarian rule is met with resistance from Batman and a group of rebellious heroes. The conflict between Batman and Superman reaches its climax in Injustice 2, bringing an end to their tumultuous war.
After defeating Brainiac, the final chapter of Injustice 2 presents players with a choice between Batman and Superman, similar to MK11's Aftermath expansion. Opting for Superman reveals a shocking twist: Brainiac has been slain, and his technology has been utilized to manipulate the mind of Batman. With Batman's strategic brilliance on his side, Superman becomes an insurmountable force. In Batman's storyline, he neutralizes the Man of Steel by employing gold kryptonite and banishing him to The Negative Zone. Additionally, Batman extends an invitation to Supergirl to join a reformed Justice League.
Many would assume that NetherRealm, in creating a sequel, would opt for the straightforward and "safe" ending where Batman returns, restoring the status quo. This would potentially allow another character to oppose Superman instead of Batman. However, Mortal Kombat 1 implies that NetherRealm is not bound to choosing one ending over the other. In Injustice 3, players might confront a victorious Superman entering a timeline where Batman emerged triumphant. To thwart him, Batman might have to release his imprisoned Superman from The Negative Zone.
DC has already incorporated alternate universes into its comic books and animated content, while Mortal Kombat 1 has demonstrated NetherRealm's openness to embracing unique and unconventional concepts. Given this, the studio now has the option to explore a similar approach with Injustice 3. They could choose the safe route with a sequel following the Batman ending, opt for something fresh with the Superman ending, or even make both endings part of the canon for a multiversal experience. Regardless of the chosen direction, many fans eagerly anticipate the release of a new Injustice game.
Mortal Kombat 1 is currently available on PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
