According to senior officials at Remedy Entertainment, Alan Wake 2 takes inspiration from renowned works of film and TV, including True Detective. The sequel, which was made available for pre-orders in May, promises to deliver a fully immersive survival horror experience with a greater emphasis on narrative-driven exploration and minimal combat encounters. The game's story centers around Saga Anderson, a new playable character who is an FBI agent investigating a series of strange murders in the imaginary town of Bright Falls, located in the Pacific Northwest.
The upcoming game's principal narrative designer, Molly Maloney, has revealed in a recent interview with VGC that True Detective served as a partial influence on the murder mystery premise. The slow-burn nature of Alan Wake 2 draws inspiration from the first season of Nic Pizzolatto's critically acclaimed drama, which currently holds a place in the top 25 best-rated TV shows of all time on IMDB. Additionally, the game attempts to balance the "buddy cop" elements of True Detective season one with the ritualistic murders, creating a compelling dynamic much like the show did, as co-director Kyle Rowley explains.
The developers of Alan Wake 2 have drawn inspiration from a variety of sources, including '90s thrillers such as Fargo and Se7en for the game's art style. In terms of gameplay and atmosphere, the game will also draw from Resident Evil and Silent Hill, similar to its predecessor. However, True Detective appears to be the most prominent influence, with thematic similarities and an author protagonist who writes himself as an unreliable narrator, reminiscent of the show's characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
Alan Wake 2 launches October 17 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
