Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki seemed like the perfect couple, but their engagement came to an unexpected end over the phone several years ago.
The professional golfer and tennis player started their relationship in 2011, and they even got engaged on New Year's Eve in 2013. However, just a few months later, McIlroy decided to end the engagement with a phone call.
McIlroy took ownership of the situation in a statement from May 2014. He acknowledged that the wedding invitations made him realize he wasn't prepared for marriage. Despite this, he wished Caroline happiness and expressed gratitude for the good times they shared.
During his relationship with Wozniacki, McIlroy met Erica Stoll, a PGA transport official. Stoll assisted him in getting to the Ryder Cup in 2012 when he overslept. Following his breakup with Wozniacki, McIlroy started dating Stoll, whom he later married in April 2017. However, in May 2024, it was revealed that McIlroy had filed for divorce from Stoll after seven years of marriage. The couple has a daughter named Poppy, born in September 2020.
Wozniacki found happiness with former NBA player David Lee, marrying him in 2019. They are now proud parents to daughter Olivia, born in June 2021, and son James, born in October 2022.

In May 2014, McIlroy decided to end the engagement that was set for November. He stated that the decision to separate was mutual.
"It's been a tough time for Caroline and me," McIlroy shared during the BMW PGA Championship, as reported by ESPN. "The statement this morning really summed it all up. We both agreed it was the right decision for us, for both of us. It's time to move forward, and I've said everything I needed to say."
Following the breakup, rumors spread that McIlroy had ended their relationship with a brief phone call. According to The Times in a May 2014 article, "The last time he called, less than a day after expressing his love for her, it was a three-minute conversation that she initially thought was a joke."
September 2014
Months after the pair called it quits, Wozniacki opened up about the breakup.
Caroline Wozniacki expressed her surprise and disappointment during an interview with Graham Bensinger. She revealed that the breakup with her partner was unexpected and impersonal. McIlroy's decision to break the news via a cold phone call, despite their seemingly idyllic relationship, raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about communication in relationships.
