Space Station Silicon Valley is an overlooked game from Rockstar North that deserves a comeback on modern hardware.
Unfortunately, the game's positive buzz and unique premise were eclipsed by the success of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. It is a pity that the game has not been made available on more recent gaming consoles.
Space Station Silicon Valley, a game developed by Rockstar Games, the creators of Grand Theft Auto, is often overlooked and forgotten. However, it deserves a comeback on modern hardware. Rockstar Games gained popularity through the success of its Grand Theft Auto series and also created other highly acclaimed games like Bully and Red Dead Redemption. The majority of these Rockstar Games titles were primarily developed by Rockstar North, formerly known as DMA Design.
DMA Design was the original name of Rockstar North before the release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The studio operated under this name from its debut game, Menace, in 1988, until the groundbreaking launch of Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001. While Grand Theft Auto brought DMA Design recognition, the studio also released a diverse range of games in the late 80s and mid-90s that were unrelated to GTA, including the innovative 3D platformer, Space Station Silicon Valley.
Space Station Silicon Valley has an intriguing concept. In this game, a sentient microchip must assume control of various animals to conquer levels and gather objects to construct a robot body. During its release, the game garnered praise for its wit and enjoyable 3D platformer gameplay. Regrettably, the positive buzz surrounding Space Station Silicon Valley did not translate into strong sales. This, coupled with DMA Design/Rockstar North's subsequent monumental success with the Grand Theft Auto franchise, has caused Space Station Silicon Valley to be completely overshadowed and largely forgotten by even the most devoted Rockstar Games enthusiasts.
Space Station Silicon Valley is trapped exclusively on the PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, and Game Boy Color, without any re-releases on Virtual Console services or the PS1 Classics line. It would be exciting to see a revival of Space Station Silicon Valley on modern gaming platforms, like PS Plus Premium or the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, although fans shouldn't get their hopes up for that to happen in reality.
Considering Rockstar Games' track record, one would expect them to have revived Space Station Silicon Valley by now. The studio has re-released many of its older games, making them easily accessible on current PlayStation consoles, and has even brought back the original Red Dead Redemption on PS4 and Switch. They have also ventured into remasters, even though the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy remaster was poorly received.
Space Station Silicon Valley offers a distinctive concept and delightful humor, making it a compelling choice. Unfortunately, accessing the game requires the use of a Nintendo 64 or PS1, which could be a drawback for potential enthusiasts.
