The director of the highly anticipated Alan Wake 2 recently discussed the extensive journey Remedy Entertainment took to create the sequel. This installment draws inspiration from survival-horror games, particularly Capcom's Resident Evil franchise.
Launching over a decade after the original Alan Wake, the announcement of Alan Wake 2 at The Game Awards 2021 came as a pleasant surprise to fans. The development team at Remedy Entertainment recently opened up about the challenges and milestones they faced during the long road to the October release of Alan Wake 2.
In an interview with MP1st,
Alan Wake 2 director Kyle Rowley and narrative designer Molly Maloney were both asked about the prolonged delay in releasing an Alan Wake sequel. According to Rowley, the reason behind this was "complicated." After the successful launch of the original game, the team had a strong desire to create a sequel. However, unfortunately, due to various reasons, the plans for a sequel never materialized. Surprisingly, every game released by Remedy after Alan Wake, such as Quantum Break and Control, had initially started development as Alan Wake 2.
Rowley explains that the team initially had the ideas for Quantum Break and Control, which they wanted to incorporate into Alan Wake 2 but couldn't do so at the time. It was during the rise in popularity of horror during the development and release of Control that Remedy was able to seize the opportunity to bring Alan Wake 2 to life.
Maloney adds that creative director Sam Lake shared the same excitement as the rest of the development team for the game. They also mention how Lake believes that the current version of the game is the best and that the right ideas for Alan Wake 2 came at the perfect time. Previews of the game have received positive feedback, with critics particularly praising the visuals and the handling of the two main characters, Alan Wake and newcomer Saga Anderson.
Alan Wake 2 releases October 27, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
