The Jaw-Dropping Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Feature That Fans Have Been Waiting For

Spider-Man 2 brings back a beloved feature not seen since Ultimate Spider-Man: the return to Queens Fans can once again swing through the iconic borough in stunning graphics and immersive gameplay

For nearly four decades, Spider-Man games have been a mainstay in the gaming industry, with some gameplay mechanics remaining constant throughout. Wall-crawling and web-swinging are two such features that have become synonymous with the superhero's video game adaptations. However, every now and then, a Spider-Man game will introduce a new mechanic or feature, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to bring back one of Ultimate Spider-Man's unique traits.

While New York City has always been a crucial aspect of Spider-Man's identity, the borough of Queens holds even more significance to the character. As Peter Parker's hometown and the largest of New York City's boroughs, Queens has played a pivotal role in Spider-Man's journey. Although it has only made one proper appearance in a Spidey video game, Ultimate Spider-Man in 2005, this is all about to change.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Brings Queens Back For the First Time Since Ultimate Spider-Man

Ultimate Spider-Man, released in 2005 for multiple platforms, takes the beloved comic series of the same name and gives it a fresh open-world video game approach. Developed by Treyarch, the game utilizes similar mechanics for both combat and web-swinging as its predecessor, Spider-Man 2, and still holds up today. However, Ultimate Spider-Man also carves out its own path by introducing new features, such as its fully explorable Manhattan and Queens borough. As Peter Parker is still a high school student in the Ultimate storyline, it makes sense for him to reside in suburban Queens with Aunt May. This new setting presents a unique challenge for players, with small two-story houses replacing the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan.

In Ultimate Spider-Man, players need to strategically use their web-zip and jumping abilities to navigate the shorter buildings of Queens, which offers a refreshing change of pace from the industrialized Manhattan. While Queens hasn't played a major role in Spider-Man games since Ultimate Spider-Man in 2005, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will allow players to explore previously unexplored areas of New York City, including Queens. The borough's appearance in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is reminiscent of Ultimate Spider-Man, with its main feature being short two-story houses that may require players to use alternative traversal methods such as web-launches.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20, exclusively for PS5.
