Clash of Clans, a popular mobile game, is getting a new addition to its universe with the release of its first-ever graphic novel, Books of Clash. The novel aims to bring a fresh layer to the overall fan experience and has been in development for about a decade. With Clash of Clans being named one of the top 50 grossing apps in 2020, discussions for the development of Books of Clash finally began. Gene Luen Yang, the graphic novelist behind the eight-volume series, drew inspiration from his personal experiences while writing.

The Story Of Hog Rider Terry

Hog Riders in Clash of Clans can be a valuable asset for players who want to lure out Clan Castle troops, while other troops like Archers or Wizards take care of the remaining defenders. The Books of Clash Volume 1 showcase the power of Hog Riders in an attack on Triumphica, home to a mix of troops including Archers, Barbarians, and Giants. The "All-Star" Hog Riders emerge victorious, and readers are introduced to Terry, also known as Terrodicus, and his trusty hog, Pim Pim. However, Terry's attempt to prove himself to his brother and clan by challenging the village of Jazzypickleton ends in defeat, leading to his exile. In an effort to redeem himself and gather intel, Terry poses as a new recruit in Jazzypickleton, where he experiences culture shock at the diverse troop population.

Growing up in a small San Jose suburb limited my exposure to diverse perspectives and ways of life. However, attending UC Berkeley opened my eyes to the vast array of people and lifestyles that exist. Interacting with individuals from different backgrounds challenged my preconceived notions and allowed me to grow as a person. Similarly, I wanted Terry to experience this same growth by leaving behind his homogeneous group of Hog Riders and venturing into the diverse community of Jazzypickleton. Just as I learned more from interacting with others at UC Berkeley than from my classes, Terry's one way of doing things is challenged in Jazzypickleton, leading to his personal growth as a character.

Terry's encounter with the diverse troops of Jazzypickleton leaves him feeling uneasy when Rokkus expresses his disdain for such a mixed group. Terry, uncomfortable with Rokkus' comment, sheepishly agrees but finds himself no longer interested in the traditional "Hog Rider Way" of destruction, a realization that mirrors the author's own departure from his parents' expectations of his career path.

Books Of Clash's Overall Message

Players can form groups in Clash of Clans, with up to 50 members who can engage in Clan Wars, exchange troops, and communicate with each other. While Yang admits he's not skilled in the game, he finds it amusing to encounter opponents with names in various languages. This feature is highlighted in Chapter 2 of Books of Clash Volume 1, where the Goblins' dialogue appears in a different language, adding to the game's appeal. It's not uncommon to face players with Korean or Russian names.

The game has the ability to bridge cultural divides and break down stereotypes, as seen in Terry's character arc. Playing with others using emotes allows for a small but meaningful way to connect with people from different cultures.
