Discover the challenges that graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang faced while making Books of Clash relatable to avid players of the popular mobile game, Clash of Clans Immerse yourself in the quirky world of Clash with this eight-volume graphic novel that brings beloved characters to life

Clash of Clans has been one of the most popular mobile games since its introduction in 2012. Supercell, the Finnish game company behind the game, has expanded the Clash universe with various titles such as Clash Royale, Clash Mini, and Clash Heroes. The latest addition to the franchise is Books of Clash, an eight-volume graphic novel that brings to life the quirky and chaotic characters of Clash.

Clash of Clans is an online multiplayer game that is free to play. Players take on the role of the chief of their clan, training troops and attacking others to gather resources in a fantasy world. The game's success has been credited with revolutionizing mobile gaming. Gene Luen Yang, the graphic novelist behind Books of Clash, recently spoke to Game Rant about the new perspective that fans will be introduced to and the overall goal of the upcoming series.

Books of Clash will provide readers with a new way to experience the world of Clash, moving from players to readers.

From Gaming to Reading: Clash of Clans' Books of Clash Graphic Novels

While Clash of Clans boasts over two dozen characters, they are mostly categorized into troops like Barbarians, Archers, Goblins, and more. Although each character has its own strength and weakness, there isn't much to differentiate them beyond their intended role. Not even the player has a unique identity or name, being referred to simply as the chief. However, Books of Clash offers a new perspective, allowing players to delve deeper into the characters and their personalities. According to Yang, this shift from a player's view to a reader's view will enable fans to connect with the characters on a more personal level, transforming them from mere troops to individuals. While playing the game, one is subjected to a God's eye view of the world, where each group of troops looks identical.

In order to tell a compelling story, it's important to focus on individual characters rather than just a group of people. This is something that we really wanted to emphasize in the first volume of our graphic novel. We want readers to be able to get to know the characters on a personal level and understand their interior lives.

The main character of the first book is Terrodicus, or Terry for short, a member of the Hog Riders. He's joined on his journey by his beloved hog, Pim Pim. Through the interactions between Terry and Pim Pim, readers will get a glimpse into their internal struggles and learn more about what motivates them.

As the story progresses, Terry meets other characters and begins to see them as individuals, rather than just members of a group. This is an important shift in perspective and one that we hope will resonate with readers.

However, it's not all smooth sailing for Terry. He faces conflict with his older brother, Rokkus, who is also the leader of the Hog Riders. This conflict is an important part of the story, as it explores the complex relationship between siblings and the challenges that can arise when one sibling feels overshadowed by the other.

Overall, our goal with this first volume is to create a rich, immersive world filled with complex characters that readers can connect with on a personal level. We hope that readers will be drawn into Terry's journey and come away with a deeper understanding of the characters and their motivations.

Gene Luen Yang is a well-known name in the graphic novel industry. He has authored several graphic novels, including American Born Chinese, which was published in 2006 by First Second Publishing. The novel explores the struggles of a young immigrant trying to come to terms with his Chinese-American identity. The book has been adapted into a television series by Disney Plus, which is set to be released on May 24th. The show will feature Oscar-winning actors Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. Yang has also written the first five graphic novel trilogies based on the hit-show Avatar: The Last Airbender. In 2016, he wrote a Chinese character in New Super-Man and returned for the limited series Superman Smashes the Klan. Yang has always dreamed of writing a book that's tied to a video game. He believes that this will help bridge the gap between gamers and readers and attract more readers to comics. This desire stems from his experience as an Asian-American.

For me, transitioning from home to school felt like moving between two distinct communities. I had a different name, spoke a different language, and adhered to different cultural expectations in each environment. It was as if I had to act as a bridge between the two worlds just to survive. This experience has shaped my perspective and influences everything I do, including my passion for Clash of Clans.

A graphic novel featuring beloved characters from Clash of Clans and Clash Royale could reinvigorate long-time fans and provide a fresh perspective on the games. Additionally, it could attract new fans who are interested in gaming and want to see these characters in action. The book's humor and message about individuality and belonging make it accessible to readers of all ages.

Volume one of Books of Clash is set to release on May 30.
