Pom Klementieff, star of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, discloses that there was a particular stunt in the film that Tom Cruise declined to perform. As the iconic superspy Ethan Hunt, Cruise is known for his daring and death-defying stunts, and this latest installment showcases some of the most ambitious and perilous action sequences of his career.
However, prior to the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Klementieff, who portrays the antagonist Paris, reveals to EW the specific stunt that Cruise refused to do. While Cruise is evidently comfortable with leaping off cliffs and clinging onto moving trains, he drew the line at kicking his co-star in the stomach during one of their fight scenes in Venice. Below is Klementieff's complete statement.
"I repeatedly urged him to kick me in this spot while flexing my abs. I insisted, 'Just go for it.' However, he adamantly refused, saying 'No, no, no, no, no.' I persisted, 'But it will be beneficial for me!' Yet, he remained unwilling to do it."
Tom Cruise's Approach To Mission: Impossible Stunts Explained
Although many of Cruise's stunts are undeniably risky, he and director Christopher McQuarrie (along with a team of other crew members) meticulously plan and prepare for months on end to ensure the utmost safety during these moments. To execute the motorcycle cliff jump in Mission: Impossible 7, for instance, Cruise dedicated an entire year to training that encompassed parachute control, base jumping, and motocross. While the scene depicts Cruise driving off a cliff, the production team actually constructed a large, smooth ramp for safety precautions, later digitally removing it using CGI.
Klementieff's experience highlights the impact of Cruise's on-set demeanor. It is evident that his passion, unwavering resolve, and concentration inspire his co-stars, as Klementieff was willing to endure a forceful blow to the abdomen in order to enhance the authenticity of an action sequence. Although the film's release is still a few weeks away, preliminary reactions to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One indicate that Cruise's approach to stunts and action has once more yielded remarkable results.
