Bringing any work to a new platform requires making changes due to its inherent connection to the medium it was initially created for. The process of adapting content can be challenging and requires careful consideration. However, the creators of Tintin Reporter - Cigars of the Pharaoh, a new adventure game, approached this task with great care and respect for the beloved and well-known property.
The Adventures of Tintin comics, originally created by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi (Hergé), revolve around the adventures of a teenage reporter named Tintin and his loyal dog Snowy. Together, they embark on dangerous missions across the globe, ensuring justice prevails. These comics have garnered worldwide adoration for almost a century, making the task of adapting them a delicate endeavor. Charles Leveugle, the product manager at publisher Microïds, recently discussed with Our website the meticulous approach the developers took in tackling this adaptation.
Leveugle stated that Cigars of the Pharaoh was developed in close collaboration with Tintinimaginatio, a company established to promote Hergé's works. Both Microïds and Pendulo Studios, the developers of the game, have extensive experience in working with licensed properties.
Thanks to the invaluable assistance provided by Tintinimaginatio, who shared Hergé's complete notes, valuable remarks, and essential tools, Pendulo Studios undertook meticulous preproduction efforts to ensure the game remained faithful to the master's work and remained coherent and relatable to the 1930s setting. Countless interactions took place between Tintinimaginatio, Pendulo Studios, and Microïds to deliver the best 3D-version of all the characters, resulting in a result that everyone involved is immensely proud of.
Adapting the comic allowed developers to delve deeper into the story, as the game introduces new dimensions to the comic adventure. A prerequisite for collaborating with Tintinimaginatio was that the game maintains a faithful adherence to the comics. Nonetheless, according to Leveugle, the comics serve as the game's framework, with additional substance supplied by Pendulo's developers. They enrich the experience by expanding on minor characters and environments, resulting in a creation not unlike the way Final Fantasy 7 Remake enhanced its original source material.
Developers faced their biggest challenge when trying to bring the iconic 2D characters of Tintin, Snowy, and others from Cigars of the Pharaoh into a 3D environment. This deeper exploration of the world presented a literal additional dimension that needed to be faithfully adapted from Hergé's comics. The decision to adapt Cigars of the Pharaoh, the fourth album in the Adventures of Tintin series, was a deliberate one. It provided a good starting point for the game, being early enough in the series but also late enough to include recognizable characters like Captain Haddock.
The comic book "Cigars of the Pharaoh" begins with Tintin and Snowy enjoying a cruise on the Mediterranean Sea. Despite being assigned a mission to Shanghai, Tintin decides to take a detour and encounters Professor Sarcophagus, an Egyptologist. The professor invites them to explore the mysterious Tomb of Kih-Oskh, kicking off an exciting adventure that takes them to Egypt, Arabia, and India. Along the way, they unravel a massive drug-trafficking network.
This thrilling story introduces several important characters from Tintin's adventures, including Thomson, Thompson, and Oliveira de Figueira, as well as his archenemy. Additionally, "Cigars of the Pharaoh" sets the stage for a future adventure, "The Blue Lotus," which may be adapted if this puzzle-based adventure proves to be popular.
As for what cigars a Pharaoh might be interested in, Leveugle admitted research for the game found something potentially shocking for long-time Tintin fans.
Pharaohs have been found to have no evidence of smoking cigars, despite some research. Hence, we are uncertain about providing any conclusive information. However, we remain confident that Kih-Oskh would have been an exceptional ruler, ruling out the possibility of smoking cigars. Tintin Reporter announces that Cigars of the Pharaoh will be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on November 7.
