The Highly Anticipated Return: Prepare for the Epic Comeback of Alan Wake Spin-Off in 2022

Remedy Entertainment's creative director addresses the potential revival of the 2012 Alan Wake spin-off, leaving fans eagerly awaiting his response

Highlights

Disappointing news for fans as there are currently no plans for an Alan Wake's American Nightmare remaster, despite the series being in the spotlight again.

The spin-off garnered a blend of positive and negative reviews, with its storyline receiving accolades while its gameplay faced criticism, thereby reducing the probability of a remaster. Additionally, fans expressed their disappointment over the lack of physical media in Alan Wake 2, despite the assurance of an extensive gameplay experience accompanied by complimentary downloadable content and purchasable expansions.

Remedy Entertainment's creative director Sam Lake has stated that there are currently no plans to remaster Alan Wake's American Nightmare. This news may come as a disappointment to fans who were hoping for a remastered version of the spin-off game, especially now that the series is back in the spotlight. Originally released in 2012 for Xbox 360 and PC, Alan Wake's American Nightmare received mixed reviews, with its storyline being praised but its gameplay receiving criticism from some critics. Despite the release of Alan Wake Remastered in 2021, the spin-off has not received the same treatment.

Now, during an interview at the EGX, Remedy's creative director, Sam Lake, discussed the possibility of a remaster. However, he advised fans not to get their hopes up for a remaster of Alan Wake's American Nightmare. The idea was considered when the first game in the series was being remastered, but the underlying technology of the base game had already diverged significantly from that of Alan Wake. As a result, the upper management at Remedy did not see it as a viable business decision. This decision aligns with the fact that the original game was far more popular than the spin-off.

In the same interview, Sam Lake addressed another controversy surrounding Alan Wake 2: the absence of physical media. He clarified that this decision was made jointly by Remedy's management and the game's publisher. Unfortunately, this news is disappointing for fans, as physical releases not only contribute to game preservation but also often become sought-after collector's items.

Unlike a possible remaster of American Nightmare, Alan Wake 2 is scheduled to be released soon. Sam Lake's statements at EGX indicated that this game will provide the most extensive gameplay experience compared to all of Remedy's previous games. To give you an idea, Alan Wake 2 is expected to offer approximately 20 hours of gameplay, which is roughly double the duration of the original game. Additionally, Lake disclosed during the interview that there will be significant amounts of free DLC for Alan Wake 2, likely extending the playtime even further. Moreover, players can look forward to two major paid expansions for the game, called Night Springs and Lake House, which will introduce additional content to the title.
