Fallout TV series story

The Fallout games revolve around the repercussions of a brief yet devastating nuclear conflict that occurred in 2077, leaving the United States in ruins. Amidst the ruins, humanity struggles to survive in make-shift settlements while abominable mutated creatures roam the desolate wasteland. These games have traversed diverse locations, ranging from the post-apocalyptic cityscape of Washington D.C. to the remnants of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The show is currently being developed, and the studios have not disclosed which aspects of the Fallout lore they will incorporate. With four mainline games and numerous spin-offs, there is abundant material to draw inspiration from.

In most Fallout games, the storyline starts with a character emerging from one of the many Vaults spread across the United States, which were built to provide protection from nuclear devastation. The moment when the Vault Dweller ventures out into the post-apocalyptic world is a significant and unforgettable part of each game, and it would be exciting to witness it come to life on-screen.

Considering that the games gained significant mainstream popularity starting from Fallout 3, it's reasonable to assume that they will prioritize adapting the more recent material. Naturally, they will include some easter eggs for the original fans.

Moreover, we have confirmation that iconic locations like the Super Dart Mart will be featured in the series, as Collider's exclusive set photos have revealed. Additionally, Amazon has disclosed that a portion of the show will be set in Vault 33, situated in Los Angeles.

From the short teaser shared in July, it seems that they will remain true to Fallout's distinctive aesthetic. The juxtaposition of 1950s American optimism with the post-nuclear destruction that permeates the world is what sets the games apart, so we can only hope that they emphasize this aspect in the show.

That being said, the series will not be a straightforward adaptation of the games. Todd Howard, in a recent podcast, clarified, "When people suggested turning it into a movie, they wanted to focus on telling the story of Fallout 3 or Fallout 4."

“For this, our goal was to create an experience that embraces the essence of the Fallout universe. Rather than simply retelling the story of the game, we wanted to carve out a new corner of the map and weave a narrative that seamlessly integrates into the world we have established, adhering to its rules and lore. While it can pay homage to elements from the games, it is not a mere replication. It exists within the same universe, yet possesses its own distinctive identity, thereby enriching the overall Fallout saga.”

Who’s working on the Fallout TV series?

In addition to the announcement teaser, Amazon has confirmed that Kilter Films will be in charge of producing the live-action adaptation. Furthermore, Todd Howard from Bethesda Game Studios and James Altman from Bethesda Softworks, who played key roles in creating the main series of games, will serve as executive producers.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet, renowned for her work on Captain Marvel, and Graham Wagner, known for his contributions to Silicon Valley, have been brought on board as the showrunners for this project. Joining them as executive producers are Athena Wickham, Lisa Joy, and Jonathan Nolan from Kilter Films. Adding to the excitement, it has been officially announced that Nolan, who previously directed the debut episode of HBO's Westworld, will also direct the inaugural episode of this series. This confirmation came in January 2022.

“Fallout is one of the most exceptional gaming franchises in history,” remarked Joy and Nolan once the initial announcement was made. “Each installment of this extraordinarily imaginative narrative has demanded an immeasurable amount of our time, time we could have spent with loved ones. Hence, we are tremendously thrilled to collaborate with Todd Howard and the other brilliant innovators at Bethesda, partnering with Amazon Studios to breathe life into this expansive, provocative, and darkly humorous universe.”
