The Hidden Secrets of Liu Kang's New Universe: Unraveling the Mystery of Cetrion in Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1 raises a burning question: Where does Cetrion, the powerful Elder God, fit into Liu Kang's new universe? As MK11's Geras makes a comeback, fans eagerly await the revelation of Cetrion's role in this thrilling saga

Highlights

Fire God Liu Kang has rewound time and created his own universe, tweaking the backstories of fallen comrades and foes to maintain peace.

Thought to be deceased, Geras surprisingly reemerges and becomes an ally of the revered Fire God, Liu Kang.

Despite sacrificing herself, there remains a chance for Cetrion to be resurrected within the new realm, serving Liu Kang and potentially aiding him in his battle against an imminent adversary.

In the past ten years, particularly since NetherRealm released the reboot in 2011, the Mortal Kombat universe has only introduced a small number of new fighters that are considered part of the official story. Mortal Kombat X marked a notable increase in new characters, such as the Kombat Kids, Erron Black, Kotal Kahn, D'Vorah, and Ferra/Tor, who joined the series for the first time. In Mortal Kombat 11, several more fighters were introduced, most of whom served as adversaries in the game's time-bending story mode. Although a couple of these newcomers will return in Mortal Kombat 1, the story is about to begin anew.

By defeating Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11's conclusion, Fire God Liu Kang utilizes her hourglass to rewind time and construct his own universe. In doing so, Liu Kang brings back his fallen allies and enemies, giving them modified backstories and origins in hopes of maintaining peace in this universe. However, the recent confirmation of Geras's inclusion suggests that the slate may not be as clean as initially presumed, potentially paving the way for Cetrion's return in Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1: Where Is Cetrion?

The Hidden Secrets of Liu Kang's New Universe: Unraveling the Mystery of Cetrion in Mortal Kombat 1

Introduced in Mortal Kombat 11, Cetrion is a character that fans feel was mistreated by NetherRealm. As an Elder God, Cetrion represents virtue, life, and light as her core values. When her brother, Shinnok, is killed by Raiden, Cetrion is convinced by her mother Kronika, the keeper of time, that the timeline must be reset to restore balance to the universe. Trusting her mother, Cetrion becomes a secondary antagonist in Mortal Kombat 11, aligning with Kronika.

Working alongside Cetrion on Kronika's team is Geras, the guardian of the hourglass. Like Cetrion, Geras is bound by a strong sense of duty that opposes the Earthrealm warriors, even though he may not completely believe they are wrong. In the end of Mortal Kombat 11's story, Geras is defeated and presumed dead. However, in the latest trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, it is revealed that Geras is not only alive but now serves Fire God Liu Kang, who possesses the hourglass. With Geras making a comeback, fans may wonder why Cetrion has not joined the roster alongside him.

Cetrion discovers that her mother Kronika has manipulated her, just like how Shinnok was deceived in the past. Despite realizing that her mother's plan to reset the universe would only bring about more chaos and death, which goes against her beliefs, Cetrion remains loyal to her mother and sacrifices herself to empower Kronika.

In the current timeline, Cetrion's demise suggests that her return is unlikely. However, considering Geras unexpectedly came back from the dead, it is not impossible for Cetrion to do the same. In the new universe controlled by Fire God Liu Kang, if he wishes for Cetrion to be alive, she will be. It is plausible for Cetrion to resurface in Mortal Kombat 1, potentially serving Liu Kang similar to Geras' newfound role. As a resurrected Elder God, Cetrion would be a formidable ally for Liu Kang, especially with a mysterious new threat on the horizon.

Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
