The Heart-Wrenching Truth Behind Sabine's Fate on Lothal Unveiled in The Mandalorian

Unveiling Sabine's heart-wrenching past, 'The Mandalorian' discloses a haunting reason for her entrapment on Lothal - the annihilation of Clan Wren during the ruthless Mandalorian Purge leaves her with no refuge but this desolate planet

Summary

Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian, stayed on Lothal after its liberation and is ready to bring back the missing Ezra Bridger with Ahsoka Tano.

Having likely lost her entire family, Clan Wren, during the Mandalorian Purge, Sabine finds herself with no other place to turn. In order to ensure her safety as a Mandalorian fugitive in a galaxy that poses a threat to her people, Sabine has found solace in the presence of Lothal. However, she intends to move on from there without delay.

Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian, chose to remain on the planet Lothal after its freedom from the Empire. This decision was made following the events of Star Wars Rebels, which occurred a few years after Return of the Jedi. In the revised Rebels epilogue, Sabine and Ahsoka Tano have a reunion, and they share a silent understanding. Sabine expresses her determination to bring Ezra Bridger back home, and with Ahsoka by her side, she embarks on a new adventure.

However, Sabine's story is filled with heartache, despite the triumph her rebel cell achieved against Grand Admiral Thrawn. Originally a cadet at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore, Sabine developed weapons capable of penetrating beskar armor, causing severe harm to those wearing it. The Empire weaponized these devices against the Mandalorian people, and as a result, Sabine's family labeled her a traitor, forcing her to leave. Although she later reconciled with Clan Wren and helped rescue her father, she returned to her Ghost crew family after passing on the Darksaber to Bo-Katan Kryze. Remaining on Lothal, Sabine vowed to protect the planet in the absence of Ezra. However, there is also a tragic explanation for her presence in Ahsoka.

Was Clan Wren Wiped Out During The Mandalorian Purge?

The Heart-Wrenching Truth Behind Sabine's Fate on Lothal Unveiled in The Mandalorian

During the New Republic Era, it was revealed in The Mandalorian that Mandalorians had gone into hiding, even after the Empire's downfall. After Bo-Katan took over as ruler, the Empire carried out a devastating act of genocide known as the Night of a Thousand Tears, destroying Mandalore. Those who survived the initial bombings were mercilessly hunted down and killed by Imperial forces, similar to the fate of the Jedi. This attack was likely in response to Mandalore's resistance against the Imperial regime, causing divisions and conflicts among the united clans.

Clan Wren, which included Sabine's mother Ursa Wren, played a vital role alongside Bo-Katan in the war against the Empire. It is highly probable that most, if not all, of Sabine's family perished during the Mandalorian Purge. While Clan Wren's stronghold is located on the planet Krownest, their troops would have been present on Mandalore during the bombings. If not, they would have faced a subsequent attack on their homeworld. Despite Sabine's efforts to bring her family together, it is likely that her family has been lost forever.

Sabine Has Nowhere Else To Go

With her blood relatives eliminated and the remaining members of the Ghost crew engaged in the Galactic Civil War, Sabine has no alternative, even if she desired to depart from Lothal. The desolation of Mandalore and potential destruction of Krownest eliminates the option of seeking assistance from Clan Wren. On top of her rebellious activities, Sabine faces double jeopardy for being a Mandalorian. Since the Imperial presence on Lothal has been eradicated, remaining there to protect the citizens is the safest course of action for Sabine in a galaxy that oppresses her people.

It has been hinted that Sabine is still struggling to cope with the losses she experienced, which may not only refer to the death of Kanan Jarrus and Ezra's disappearance. If Sabine's family was indeed wiped out during the Night of a Thousand Tears, she has suffered more than anyone on the Ghost crew and will likely be in a state of profound despair. However, her strong ties to the rebels and inherent Mandalorian resilience will ultimately propel her back into the fray. Ahsoka's presence could intensify the tragedy of The Mandalorian's darkest moment, but it won't be long before Sabine Wren leaves Lothal.
