During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Pom Klementieff, the star of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, discussed the collaborative process employed by Christopher McQuarrie in creating his characters. Klementieff, who plays the role of Paris, a French assassin aiming to eliminate Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise), revealed that McQuarrie involves the actors in shaping their characters. This approach is quite distinct from her experience working with James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy. Klementieff also mentioned that other notable actors such as Esai Morales, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Hayley Atwell have joined the Mission: Impossible franchise.

It's such a stark contrast. What initially captured my interest in the character are the talents of Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise. No matter what role they wanted me to portray, we would have found an exciting way to bring it to life. However, their approach is completely different from the norm. Instead of designing a predefined character, they first choose the actor and then shape the character around their unique skills and contributions. It's an ongoing dialogue, a collaborative process where we jointly craft the character. This is truly awe-inspiring because it grants us a tremendous amount of creative freedom. There are numerous scenes and moments, like the one on the train where I spontaneously drew a heart. That was never written in the script; I simply improvised it. The experience of working with them offers an abundance of artistic liberty.
Despite already having a decade of experience prior to the sequel, Klementieff gained widespread recognition through her endearing portrayal of the exquisitely innocent Mantis in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Having reprised the role in five subsequent Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including the recently premiered conclusion to James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, audiences predominantly perceive the French actress as a central figure.
Content: This mindset creates unique expectations for audiences entering Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, as Klementieff takes on the role of a ruthlessly fierce antagonist. The trailers released for the upcoming Tom Cruise sequel have showcased various intense action sequences involving her character. Examples include a gripping confrontation with Ethan in a narrow alleyway, a thrilling pursuit of Ethan and Atwell's Grace through European streets, and intense fights against unidentified individuals on a train.
While Klementieff has previously portrayed a villain in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake and the Netflix superhero comedy Thunder Force, her portrayal of Paris in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One promises to be a captivating departure from her previous roles. With reports suggesting her return in Dead Reckoning Part Two, it will be intriguing to witness the evolution of her villainous character across these two films.
