The Fantastic Four to Draw Inspiration from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

The director of the upcoming Fantastic Four film has cited his experience with the hit sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia as a key influence on his superhero project

The director of the MCU's upcoming Fantastic Four film has disclosed that his previous experience working on the sitcom It's Always Sunny will have an impact on his approach to superhero storytelling. In the sixth phase of the MCU, as a Fantastic Four movie is in progress, notable progress has been made. Matt Shakman, director of WandaVision, is set to helm the project, and the script has been penned by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer, known for their work on Disaster Wedding.

Up until now, we have only been informed about the initiation of production and various cast rumors. Unfortunately, there is a significant lack of information regarding the actual storyline. Nevertheless, the director of the film has recently revealed a rather unexpected source of inspiration for the movie.

It’s Always Sunny inspires Fantastic Four director

Director Matt Shakman, who has also worked on 43 episodes of the beloved comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, disclosed in a recent interview with ComicBook.com that the actors from Always Sunny imparted invaluable lessons to him, particularly in the realms of comedy and chemistry.

"I have gained a great deal of knowledge from my experience working on It's Always Sunny throughout the years," he expressed. "The individuals involved possess a distinctive blend of lightheartedness and exactness, which I believe is essential in all creative endeavors.

"You must maintain a youthful spirit, akin to playing in a sandbox and constantly inventing. Simultaneously, you must approach your work with strict attention to detail, and in the realm of comedy, this rigor surpasses that required in any other field. Crafting humor with precision is often far more challenging than producing intricate special effects. Hence, the importance of combining playfulness and precision."

Shakman emphasized the importance of the rule of improv in the creative process. He believes in building upon each other's ideas by saying, "I like what you're bringing. Now let's also do that plus this." This collaborative mindset is key to producing anything remarkable, whether it's a grand production like Monarch that involves multiple continents or a small project like what Paddy's Pub creates with limited resources and a few individuals. Shakman believes that this spirit of collaboration influences everything he does.

Shakman decided to step away from the next Star Trek film to work on Fantastic Four instead. This movie is also being released amidst a recent shake-up in the MCU. For more information on the MCU's Fantastic Four movie, click here. Don't forget to explore our other superhero hubs below:

I am excited to see how Shakman incorporates the lessons he learned from working on It's Always Sunny into the Fantastic Four film. The combination of comedy and superhero action could make for a truly unique and memorable movie. I am also curious to see how the film will fit into the larger MCU.
