Highlights
Players attending the Pokemon World Championships received new information about the franchise, including an update on the upcoming DLC, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero.
The initial part of the downloadable content (DLC) is set to release on September 13, showcasing the introduction of the exciting new location, Kitakami, along with a range of fresh Pokemon. A notable addition to this DLC is the Roto-Stick, a special tool designed to enhance photographs taken with one's Pokemon. The trailer demonstrates how this feature enables players to capture better pictures; however, it is worth noting that the Pokemon's reactions to specific poses or emotes from their trainers are not integrated. Nevertheless, this inclusion proves to be a valuable asset, and Game Freak is actively working towards further enhancing these features for upcoming Pokemon games.
With the Pokemon World Championships of 2023 on the horizon, players were treated to a Pokemon Presents presentation packed with exciting updates about the franchise. However, fans of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had to wait until the very end for news about the upcoming DLC, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. This included a detailed overview of what players can expect from both part one and part two of the expansion.
Dedicated fans who stayed until the final moment were rewarded with the announcement that the first part of the DLC would be released on September 13. This came after a comprehensive breakdown of the contents of The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk, including the introduction of the splendid new land of Kitakami, where players can explore, encounter and capture the new Loyal Three Pokemon. Additionally, players will have access to the Roto-Stick, a special tool for enhancing in-game photographs.
What Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Photo Mode Lacked
In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, trainers can capture pictures and selfies using their Rotom Phones. Additionally, players are provided with a range of emotes to use outside of photo mode, allowing trainers to take pictures together while exploring Paldea. While the announcement of this feature was similar to that of the Teal Mask's Roto-Stick, it unfortunately did not meet the needs and expectations of many players.
Considering that a mainline Pokemon game typically includes the ability for fans to take photos, it would be expected that trainers could pose with their creatures for adorable snapshots. However, the critters do not react when their trainers take out the camera for a selfie or two, although some Pokemon may respond to players' emotes. This was a disappointment for those who enjoy capturing moments with significant catches such as legendaries or Shinies.
However, the Roto-Stick available in Kitakami appears to revolutionize the process. In the trailer, a trainer is witnessed instructing her Ninetales to pose for a picture, ensuring it gazes directly into the camera while utilizing the Roto-Stick. Another scene showcases other players and their Pokemon smiling and looking directly into the camera, indicating that players will now have a reliable way to capture pictures of their critters.
This is a significant development for both Shiny Hunters and casual fans of Scarlet and Violet's Pokedex lineup. Previously, taking pictures with their Pokemon was a hit or miss situation. Trainers would either have to manipulate their pocket monsters into facing the correct direction or rush against the clock before the critter began evading or dozing off.
Although the Roto-Stick has its advantages, players should temper their expectations regarding its capabilities for capturing Pokemon pictures. While the trailer suggests that creatures will move within the frame, allowing for some creative shots with precise timing, it does not appear that the Pokemon will respond to specific poses or emotes from their trainers. Consequently, this limits the feature's ability to effectively showcase a player's captured Pokemon to other fans.
Despite these limitations, Game Freak is making efforts to gradually meet players' expectations through these improvements. Although the photo mode in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet may not fully fulfill players' desires, it remains quite popular and is likely to return even better in future Pokemon titles. The broader angles and inclusion of Pokemon in this mode serve as promising beginnings to potentially more rewarding and enjoyable features in Generation 10.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
