The Dark Brotherhood has always been highly esteemed in The Elder Scrolls, particularly during Oblivion when it was at its peak. At that time, the organization boasted not only a Listener but also all the active Speakers of the Black Hand in Cyrodiil. The headquarters of the Dark Brotherhood was located in Cheydinhal during the Oblivion Crisis, with Lucien Lachance serving as the overseeing Speaker. Lucien guided the Hero of Kvatch from recruitment to their unfortunate fate, making him a beloved character who unexpectedly returns in Skyrim.
Lucien's role as a mentor and devoted ally within the Dark Brotherhood solidified his status as one of the most cherished NPCs in Oblivion. When the Hero begins eliminating members of the Black Hand, eventually even killing the Listener, Lucien confronts them and trusts their plea of innocence. He assures the Hero that he will resolve the situation, ensuring they are not held accountable for the aftermath. However, his tragic demise intensifies when the Hero discovers that the remaining members of the Hand blame them for the deaths and have sought revenge by murdering Lucien and mutilating his body.
The Fate of Lucien Lachance in The Dark Brotherhood
After 200 years since Oblivion, the Dark Brotherhood was left in ruins in both Skyrim and Cyrodiil. Cicero's journals in Skyrim revealed that the Sanctuaries across Cyrodiil were plundered and the last Listener was killed by an angry mob. The Last Dragonborn is then bestowed with the role of the first Listener in many years, and receives numerous rewards along the journey. These include the ability to summon a Spectral Assassin and a unique horse called Shadowmere, known to fans of Oblivion as the horse that Lucien Lachance lent to the player.
To further enhance the experience, Wes Johnson, the voice actor of Lucien in Oblivion, returns to lend his voice to the Spectral Assassin. This brings a slightly happier conclusion for Lucien, as in the events of Oblivion he met his demise as a traitor. Despite existing in the Void, he seems at peace with his fate and willingly serves the new Listener when summoned.
Lucien's Role in The Dark Brotherhood of Skyrim
Lucien is an extremely helpful Spectral Assassin since he is considered a follower rather than a summon, allowing him to remain indefinitely by your side. While he cannot be directly interacted with, he can still be healed using Restoration spells like any other follower. Additionally, Lucien offers valuable insight during Dark Brotherhood quests, advising against killing Cicero and encouraging trust in the wisdom of the Night Mother. He also shares memories from his past and subtly hints at the Hero of Kvatch in various locations throughout Skyrim.
When summoned alongside Shadowmere, Lucien warmly greets the horse as an "old friend". Shadowmere was Lucien's trusted steed during the events of Oblivion and was temporarily loaned to the Hero of Kvatch. Shadowmere possesses evident supernatural qualities, appearing in Skyrim hovering above a pool of dark water, shrouded in black smoke accompanied by thunder and lightning. Praised as one of the finest horses in the game, Shadowmere excels in durability and boasts extraordinary stamina. As an immortal creature, he surpasses any other horse in longevity.
Despite Lucien's tragic fate as a traitor, players have not overlooked his endearing character. They were able to witness a satisfying resolution to his story through the Dark Brotherhood quest line. Lucien's role as a mentor to new members and his contribution to the revival of the organization would have undoubtedly filled him with pride in his lifetime.
