What Is 'I Woke Up a Vampire' About?
Carmie Henley's life takes an unexpected turn on her 13th birthday when she awakens to the realization that she possesses incredible superpowers. In a vivid dream, she hears a mysterious woman refer to her as a "vampling" while ominous dark clouds gather above. Eager to share this revelation, Carmie confides in her best friend Kev (Niko Ceci), who cautions her about the potential consequences that often come with great power. Meanwhile, Carmie eagerly prepares for her audition for the school musical, tirelessly practicing for months. She knows that she must prove herself against her classmate Leanna (Ana Araujo), who has received extensive training in theater and dance for over a decade. After school, Kev takes Carmie to Hammer and Tong Comics, the local comic book store owned by Elijah Guy (Kris Siddiqi), which happens to be his favorite spot. Immersed in his job at the store and his love for comics, Kev quickly makes a connection. He excitedly reveals to Carmie a copy of the "Blended" comic book, delving into the realm of Mythics, legendary creatures that roamed the Earth long before humanity rose to dominance. The Blendeds, children of both humans and Mythics, become a captivating subject of intrigue, especially for Carmie, who was adopted and knows nothing about her biological parents. With this newfound revelation, Carmie finds herself filled with a joy she has never experienced before.
Later that day, Carmie stumbles upon two newcomers in the neighborhood — Madison (Aaliyah Cinello) and Dylan (Zebastin Borjeau). Little does she know, Dylan hails from the renowned Van Helsing family, a lineage of monster hunters. In this unfamiliar city, Dylan is on a mission assigned by Elijah, also known as the Collector. His task is to locate and capture Blendeds, a unique breed. Shortly after arriving, Dylan senses that something is amiss with Carmie and, under pressure from the Collector, reveals his findings without disclosing her identity.

While investigating the world of Mythics and Blendeds, Kev discovers that the Blendeds are mysteriously disappearing and being coerced into becoming full-fledged Mythics. According to the comics, on their 16th birthday, all Blendeds must make a life-altering decision: remain human or embrace their inner Mythic. Opting to stay a Blended means relinquishing their human memories. A merciless group of predators known as the Hunters relentlessly pursue the Blendeds, with the intention to capture and control all the Mythics. Determined to locate the hunter, Kev embarks on his quest. Meanwhile, Carmie grapples with her newfound powers and the challenges they present. She comes to the realization that she can no longer be photographed due to the radiant glow emanating from within her, making her resemble a glowing stick.
Carmie's attempts at maintaining her disguise quickly crumble when her step-siblings Aiden and Jayden uncover her extraordinary abilities. In exchange for their silence, they manipulate Carmie into assisting them in winning an underground gaming tournament. However, Carmie's misuse of her powers prompts a warning from another mythical being about the potential repercussions of Blendeds attempting to alter human events. This also presents Carmie with a newfound realization that she may have to make a difficult decision in the future. Meanwhile, Kev makes progress in his investigation when he discovers that his new friend, Dylan, is the hunter he has been searching for. Unbeknownst to Dylan, Kev secretly follows him to his training grounds. At school, Kev struggles to focus on his duties after landing a significant role in the musical "Fangs of the Opera" due to his preoccupation with Leanna. As Kev's claims regarding the hunter prove to be true, Carmie's curiosity about her origins is piqued, leading her to delve into the identity of her birth parents. With Kev's assistance, she locates Professor Victoria Rhodes, the sole expert on Blendeds besides Kev. Professor Rhodes, who was once a vampling like Carmie, chose to chronicle her human experiences in order to retain her memories. Carmie realizes that if she decides to become a Mythic, she will lose all recollection of her human side. When Carmie inquires about her parents, she receives a grim warning to stay away from her malevolent birth mother.

After discovering that her own mother is a She-Wolf, Carmie is hit with another shocking revelation when she learns that Madison is also a Blended. Despite having a great night with her friends, Madison's risky move exposes her mythical presence to Elijah. Concerned, Elijah decides to inform his hired hunter about the presence of a Blended at their school. However, Dylan, torn between his friendship with Madison and his duty as a hunter, ultimately chooses to capture Madison and hand her over to the Collector. Meanwhile, Kev discovers the true motive behind the Collector's actions. It turns out that the powerful Mythic, the Shapeshifter, is holding the Collector's daughter hostage and recruiting Blendeds for her evil army.
Heartbroken over Madison's capture, Carmie confronts Dylan and pleads for his help in finding her friend, testing the authenticity of their friendship. In a surprising turn of events, Dylan decides to abandon his hunter persona and ally himself with his newfound friends. Together, they devise a plan to rescue Madison from the clutches of the Collector. When the Shapeshifter arrives to claim her captive, she is met with an empty-handed Collector who failed to deliver his own daughter. Assuring that Elijah will never hear from his daughter again, the enigmatic Shapeshifter disappears into thin air.

With one emergency resolved, Carmie faces the urgent task of reaching the school at all costs to assume the lead role in the school musical. A brief encounter between Leanna and Carmie's vampire form has rendered Leanna voiceless, leaving Carmie as the sole option for the lead. Despite her fears of not being up to the challenge, Carmie impresses everyone with her exceptional performance when the moment arrives. Dylan seizes his opportunity to take the stage as well when the original lead, Benny, breaks his leg just before the finale. As the final applause echoes, Carmie decides to highlight Leanna, who unexpectedly comes through for everyone despite her previously rude behavior.
In the conclusion of "I Woke Up a Vampire," Madison chooses to depart from the town after bidding a heartfelt farewell to Kev. Following her remarkable performance, Carmie receives a call from the singer Rick Astley, who cautions her against placing trust in the wrong individuals. It turns out Rick is also a mythical being, implying that Carmie may have a greater role to play in the grand scheme of things. The remaining pieces of the puzzle finally fall into place. Just before Season 1 concludes, Kev stuns Carmie by revealing her mother's true identity, leaving her in a state of shock. To Carmie's disbelief, she discovers her real mother is the malevolent Shapeshifter, who has been waging war against humanity. Adding another twist, the Collector is also unveiled as a mythical being. He is seen perusing his photographs alongside his daughter, who eerily resembles Carmie. Without a doubt, Carmie's journey is destined to become even more tumultuous as she embarks on a quest for answers to the questions plaguing her mind. As predicted in a letter to Kev from the author of "Blended," Carmie finds the truth from the finale of "I Woke Up a Vampire" to be far from relieving.
