Jujutsu Kaisen has wrapped up its explosive 23-episode second season of the anime, while the manga continues to soar with 247 chapters and more on the way. Gege Akutami's supernatural dark fantasy series is experiencing tremendous success in both mediums.
A detail that may have gone unnoticed is Ryomen Sukuna's animosity towards his vessel, Yuji Itadori. Initially, it appeared that the two were coexisting in a strange and twisted harmony until Sukuna took over Megumi's body to regain full strength. However, the manga has recently delved into the reasons behind Sukuna's dislike for the teenager.
Jujutsu Kaisen: The reason why Sukuna detests Yuji
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 247, Sukuna dismisses Yuji Itadori as "boring" and lacking any interesting qualities. This interaction further solidifies Sukuna's disdain for Yuji. The reason for this dislike is later revealed in a conversation between Kenjaku and Sukuna, where the former confirms the theory that Yuji is his offspring. This conversation reinforces Sukuna's negative perception of Yuji as his ex-vessel and leads Kenjaku to thank the Demon King for "getting along with my son."
The character Kenjaku in the anime Jujutsu Kaisen (Image via MAPPA) is speculated to be the reason for Sukuna's animosity towards Yuji. Despite their collaboration, Sukuna seemed to hold a distinct dislike for Kenjaku, which only deepened over time. Yuji's connection to Kenjaku's experiments further fueled Sukuna's negative perception of him.
Again, given Sukuna's history, he also started out as a regular sorcerer before breaking boundaries and rising to become the King of Curses. Because of all the effort he put in to gain his power, he only respected those who did the same. However, in Yuji's case, his exceptional physical abilities were the result of an experiment. In other words, he didn't earn it. This was entirely unimpressive to the Demon King.

Sukuna represents the concept of freedom, solely seeking absolute strength and taking any actions necessary to attain it. In a way, he lives unrestrained, without a specific purpose or objective. Conversely, Yuji was purposefully created by Kenjaku with a specific end goal in mind, setting him on a predetermined path.
This fundamental difference is why Sukuna holds no interest in the teenager. He believes in unbridled autonomy, living without constraints or obligations. Being bound to something means relinquishing control over one's own life, and Sukuna refuses to live for anyone but himself.
Hiromi Higuruma earns the acknowledgment of the King of Curses
Another sorcerer caught Sukuna's attention - Higuruma, whose Domain use and ability to keep his sword active between amplifications impressed Sukuna. In the eyes of Sukuna, Higuruma displayed a profoundness of ability that resembled his own.
Despite having awakened his cursed technique just two months ago, Higuruma wielded it like a seasoned sorcerer. In a short amount of time, he almost fully understood it and used it effectively. His talent was "equal to Gojo Satoru's," and he continued to evolve with each encounter, earning him recognition from the great Ryomen Sukuna.
Final Thoughts

The antagonist in Jujutsu Kaisen, Ryomen Sukuna, embodies certain ideals despite being fearsome. Gege's skillful writing allows his character to delve into topics that are distant from the series' main characters.
It's worth noting that there is a distinction between earning power and having it handed to you. Sukuna had to earn his status, while Yuji obtained his power as a result of an experiment. Additionally, Yuji was created for a specific purpose, whereas Sukuna exists solely for himself. Finally, Yuji is connected to Kenjaku, which further adds to Sukuna's disdain for him.
Editor's P/S
As a hard fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I am fascinated by the complex relationship between Sukuna and Yuji. Sukuna's intense disdain for Yuji is a central theme in the series, and it has been gradually unraveling as the story progresses. The recent revelations in chapter 247 shed new light on Sukuna's motivations and provide a deeper understanding of his character.
Sukuna's animosity towards Yuji stems from several factors. Firstly, Sukuna views Yuji as "boring" and lacking any interesting qualities. This is because Yuji's exceptional physical abilities were the result of an experiment, rather than something he earned through hard work and dedication. Sukuna, who started out as a regular sorcerer and rose to become the King of Curses through his own efforts, holds no respect for those who gain power without putting in the necessary effort.
