Ahsoka will mark the live-action debut of Ezra Bridger, the protagonist of the animated series Star Wars Rebels that premiered in 2014. Played by Eman Esfandi, Bridger has previously only appeared as a hologram in Ahsoka's promotion, resembling his appearance in the Rebels finale. Series creator Dave Filoni has kept the whereabouts of Ezra a mystery, but has hinted that the young Jedi survived his encounter with Grand Admiral Thrawn. In Ahsoka, the search for Ezra will be just as important as the main character's mission to stop Thrawn's return.
Once Ezra is found and rescued by his comrades, he is expected to have a significant role in the storyline set during the New Republic Era. The Mandalorian series will conclude with a movie directed by Filoni, where Thrawn will serve as the main antagonist. As Ezra played a crucial part in defeating Thrawn in Rebels, it is likely that he will contribute to the New Republic's victory over the resurgence of the Imperial Remnant. Ahsoka may reveal that Ezra Bridger holds the key to the future of the Star Wars franchise as his location and mission are revealed, showcasing his growth from the beginning of his journey as a Jedi.

Ezra Bridger Was The Hero Of Star Wars Rebels
Rebels introduced Ezra Bridger, voiced by Taylor Gray. He was a young street urchin, residing alone within an abandoned communications tower on the planet Lothal. His parents were taken away when he was just seven years old for broadcasting messages against the Empire. Being born on Empire Day, the day Palpatine declared himself Emperor, Ezra was merely two days older than Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. This meant that he was 14 years old when Rebels commenced, and approximately 28 during Ahsoka's timeline. By relying on a peculiar instinct for survival, Ezra managed to teach himself the arts of pickpocketing from the Empire and pilfering from local food vendors.
In the Rebels pilot episode "Spark of Rebellion," the fate of the protagonist took a turn when he crossed paths with the Ghost crew in Capital City on the planet Lothal. During a theft operation, he managed to obtain a speeder bike equipped with blasters from the Imperial forces, and attempted to escape from the rebels. Kanan Jarrus, a Jedi who had survived the events of Order 66, sensed the protagonist's Force abilities while chasing him, and their subsequent encounters with the Empire. Although initially, the protagonist stole Kanan's lightsaber and Jedi holocron, he eventually opened the holocron, showing Kanan that he was worthy of being taught. Accepting Kanan's offer to become his Jedi apprentice, the protagonist became a member of the Ghost crew.
Over the following years, the protagonist underwent intense training, even though Kanan's knowledge was limited. He had several encounters with the dark side, using his emotions to protect his friends. However, he quickly realized his inferiority when facing Darth Vader on both Lothal and Malachor, resulting in the destruction of his first lightsaber. Despite this, the former Sith Lord Darth Maul took an interest in the protagonist, as they both sought knowledge to destroy the Sith. However, the protagonist rejected Maul's offer to become his apprentice, realizing that he had all he needed with his Ghost family, aided briefly by Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Ezra's remarkable ability to form connections with both creatures and people proved to be immensely fruitful in the end. While his unwavering dedication was to the Rebel Alliance's cause, Ezra's true mission lay in liberating Lothal from the clutches of the Empire, a task he could only accomplish with the assistance of his friends. As Rebels drew to a close, Ezra, now more matured in his Jedi abilities, was struck by his greatest tragedy - the loss of his mentor, Kanan, who perished while selflessly saving his crew in a fuel explosion. Guided by Ahsoka Tano, Ezra came to understand the ultimate wisdom his master had been imparting to him in the World Between Worlds: the importance of letting go. Deeply enlightened, Ezra harnessed this newfound knowledge and his profound acceptance of the will of the Force in order to emancipate Lothal, aided by every ally he had encountered on his arduous journey.
Ezra Sacrificed Himself In Star Wars Rebels' Finale
Although the Liberation of Lothal was a successful mission, it came at a great price: Ezra selflessly sacrificed himself to ensure that Grand Admiral Thrawn and his fleet were driven away from the planet. This marked a defining moment for Ezra as a Jedi Padawan, as he faced a difficult choice that would have consequences for himself. Like his late master Kanan, Ezra prioritized the welfare of Lothal over his own well-being. By summoning the help of the purrgil, a species of space whales, Ezra and Thrawn were transported to the Unknown Regions through hyperspace. Since then, their whereabouts have remained unknown for more than ten years.
In the epilogue of Rebels, Sabine Wren and Ahsoka Tano set off on a journey to bring Ezra back home, a story that will be retold in Ahsoka. Tano has heard rumors of Thrawn's return as the "heir to the Empire," and this is further hinted at in The Mandalorian season 3 with the Imperial Remnant Shadow Council discussing his Project Necromancer. In Ahsoka, the focus is on the search for Thrawn, with both the heroes and mysterious villains vying to find the Grand Admiral and unlock the power that his presence brings.
Although Ezra and Thrawn were once connected during their exploration of the Unknown Region, it's highly unlikely that they are still in contact. For Thrawn to amass a new fleet and pose a threat to the New Republic, a much more devious plan must be at play. While Ezra can only hold off Thrawn and his forces for a limited time on his own, whatever revelation he had in the Unknown Regions was significant enough for him to stay away from the known galaxy. However, the time has come for Ezra to rejoin the fight, and his bond with Sabine will be the catalyst for what lies ahead.
Sabine Is Using Ezra Bridger's Lightsaber In Ahsoka
In Ahsoka, Sabine Wren will use Ezra Bridger's second lightsaber as her own. She previously received guidance from Kanan and Ezra in Rebels to fight with the Darksaber, which gave her a solid foundation in lightsaber combat, combined with her natural warrior abilities. Ahsoka Tano has taken Sabine under her wing as an apprentice, teaching her the ways of the Jedi in a complicated and messy relationship. Sabine still mourns the loss of Ezra, as they were separated by fate, leaving her without a person she considered a sibling or possibly something more.
Before his sacrifice in Rebels, Ezra left a holo-recording for Sabine. While there was a general message for the entire Ghost crew, an extended version in Ahsoka shows Ezra explaining the difficult decisions a Jedi must make. This message serves as a lesson for Sabine as she embarks on her own Jedi path, relying on Ezra's words and weapon. Sabine made a few changes to Ezra's lightsaber, but it remains mostly the same, with its signature green blade. When Ezra ultimately returns in Ahsoka, the lightsaber may be returned to its rightful owner, and Sabine will go on to forge her own.
Ahsoka releases new episodes Tuesdays at 6pm PT / 9pm ET on Disney+.
