A night market goes beyond being a market that operates in the evening, which is essential knowledge for fans of the upcoming social simulation game, Mineko's Night Market. Drawing from Japanese cultural traditions and folklore, the unique ambiance of a night market plays a vital role in shaping the game's overall aesthetic.

Mineko's Night Market presents itself as a game centered around "crafting crafts, eating eats, and catting cats." Players follow the story of the young protagonist, Mineko, as she moves to a struggling island community situated at the foot of Mount Fugu. Throughout the changing seasons, Mineko forms new friendships and works to restore her new town to its former glory. Along the way, she unravels the mysteries surrounding local superstitions such as the worship of the Sun Cat Nikko. Game Rant recently interviewed Brent Kobayashi, co-founder of Meowza Games (alongside Brandi Kobayashi), discussing these aspects of the game and its strong Japanese influence.

The influences are not meant to be subtle. While it does not include real-world mythology surrounding the mountain, Mount Fugu clearly draws inspiration from the sacred and mysterious nature of Mount Fuji. The significant influence of Japanese folklore and culture extends beyond just Mount Fugu, as Brent Kobayashi explains. Raised in Vancouver, Canada by Japanese-born parents, Kobayashi's own upbringing brought the night market to life.

Brent shared with the Kobayashis that the night market provided an ideal backdrop for a game. He painted a vivid picture of the vibrant atmosphere teeming with various sounds, smells, and sights that filled the tranquil summer evening air. This imagery, combined with the diverse array of products, delectable food offerings, entertaining games, and the company of friends, created the perfect ambiance for a cozy social game reminiscent of Animal Crossing.

The Sun Cat Nikko, a local divine figure, draws inspiration from Japanese folklore, particularly the yokai entity called Bakaneko. Bakaneko possess the ability to shapeshift, mimic human speech, and command wolves to attack. Another influence on Nikko is the tale of Momotaro, which tells the story of mysterious children found in a river by parents who were unable to conceive. While not all of the feline themes in Mineko's Night Market originate from folktales, Brent acknowledged that their love for cats, nurtured by their experiences growing up, played a significant role in the creation of the game. Both Brent and Brandi have been fortunate to witness cats regularly visiting their porch, seemingly guarding their home by sitting on the stoop of their front door, although they are unsure of the reasons behind this behavior. Despite developing allergies and not having cats of their own, this game allowed them to immerse themselves in a world filled with feline companions.

The cultural exploration at the heart of all this lies in the night market.

The vibrant and dynamic ambiance of a night market surpasses daytime markets in our eyes. The captivating sights, not to mention the tantalizing aromas, blend harmoniously with the cool evening breeze, especially on a balmy summer night. It creates an extraordinary sensory experience amidst the serene tranquility of the night that is simply unparalleled.

Mineko's Night Market will be available for Steam and Switch on September 26, followed by its release on PS4, PS5, and Xbox One on October 26.
